Running in a girl’s cross country meet isn’t as easy as it sounds, but with a little experience and help it can become a better experience. The first thing everyone does is line up on a spray painted line in the grass. Before the race even starts the race official tells us the rules and counts everyone that is running. He also tells us about any big holes or ditches that we may encounter in our 2 mile journey. At least half a week before your meet it is important to drink plenty of water and eat fairly healthy. Hydrating your body all through this half week can actually help during the race. The things you eat can either slow you down or help you out. For example, drinking a soda the day before the race will just slow you down because of all …show more content…
The downhill is the time to really run a little faster and let the hill “carry” you down. Also when running in mud it is important not to drastically slow down. If you slow down to a walking pace in the mud it is an opportunity for another runner to pass you. There are also some tricks to passing someone. Passing a competitor is obviously important in a race. Before passing someone the first thing that needs to be done is to slow down your breathing. If you are breathing heavy it lets the competitor know that you are tiring out and they can pass you fairly easily if they work at it. When passing someone do it quickly. By doing so it lets them think that you have a lot more energy left in you than they do. Chances are they will give up and stay at the same pace they are. There are even steps for cross country runners who aren’t as good as everyone else. The most important step in my opinion is to master walking without anyone seeing you. By doing this it lets people think that you hadn’t walked at all so they will think that you have more endurance than you actually do. Next when you do walk, fast walk. That way your pace isn’t as slow, therefore; it makes it even less noticeable that you walked. Lastly don’t compare yourself to anyone else in the race. You are doing what you can do they just may have been running for a lot longer than you. Set a goal of how fast you want to run and really work towards it. A good thing
Cross country and track to an outsider, they can only be seen as running. Well, to a student of the sport they are both so much more. Runners are gathered to both, but there are plenty of variations between the two. Although I love both of these sports, if I had to side with one, I would choose track. These can commonly be seen in training, races, and people.
As far as the length of meets, track meets are longer than cross country meets, track meets have many more events than cross country meets. In my opinion, placing in track is easier than placing in cross country, because in track meets there are only 9 runners per heat, and usually there are 2 to 4 heats. On the other hand, cross country has from 200 to as much as 700 people racing at the same time! Imagine that, running with 700 people, cluttered and being shoved and pushed while running. Not the best feeling in the world. Sometimes you get “spiked”, other runners tend to kick you or step on you with their spikes. Usually runners use plastic spikes, but there are some runners that use metal spikes, and at times they use it in a way to help them cheat, by “spiking” ...
Many people argue that cross country is one of the hardest, most physically challenging sports there is out there. A lot of people shudder at the idea of running two or more miles on hilly, steep, muddy and rocky trails. The funny thing about that is that is not even the worst part. In order to run two to four miles in races, one must prepare. “How do you prepare your body to run this long?” one might ask. That is where my argument comes in. Being a cross country runner of four years, I have seen, done and heard of a plethora of ways and strategies to become a successful cross country runner. Some are outlandish, ridiculous and just plain out stupid; but some are also rewarding, beneficial and worth the hard work. Personally, I feel like having a good strong balanced diet, learning how to pace yourself and maintain a positive, motivational attitude and the key ingredients in being a successful cross country runner.
Take the position of a runner in the starting block for a short running race. Place one foot forward and one foot back while placing your hands on the starting line.
Its not quite easy to be a successful track runner. You have to be devoted enough to observe your eating habits, be able to weightlift, and constantly practice plyometric drills. Plyometrics are exercises used to strengthen leg muscles; which can include regular
Have you ever been to a horse race? Seeing the riders give their horses a pat and an apple after the race, people cheering for their horse as it runs rapidly to the finish line? Seems like a great time. But what happens to those horses after they are done their race. What happens to the people who gambled their family’s lives savings. All horse racing should be shut down due to the well being of the horses, the effects of gambling, and the lack of interest.
Running is a very simple task, all it is is rapid leg movements, along with arm swinging, through long strides while on foot. To be considered an act of running, both feet must be held off the ground at regularly spaced brief intervals. Believe it or not, there is actually a lot of physics behind running. There is the speed of the runner, the length of each stride the runner takes, the energy you use and how to save it, and then you have the pendulum law.
Rowing, originally used as a form of torture for convicted criminals, is now a recreational enjoyment for all. Despite the conditions, those slaves, now known as athletes, are demanded for pressing manpower at all times. In modern day, rowing is a year-round sport where people voluntarily go to endure hell and seem proud of the accomplishment. Seemingly, it should create more problems than any other sport because of how much time it consumes and how much misery it puts athletes through. However, people disregard that the effect it has in the long run actually outshines the predicaments of the present. Crew’s long dark history has turned it into one of the worlds most beloved and competitive Olympic sports and a cherished part of life for millions
I signed up to run track in the spring and went to summer conditioning for cross country. That’s when my coaches, teammates, and myself noticed that my running has improved significantly from when I first started. I knew that I had to work hard my senior year to achieve my goals for running. Running is a mental sport. The workouts I had to do were brutally painful and I had stay positive throughout the run because I know the training I had to do will help me during a race.
“You are a great champion. When you ran, the ground shook, the sky opened and mere mortals parted. Parted the way to victory, where you'll meet me in the winner's circle, where I'll put a blanket of flowers on your back.” This is a quote from one of my favorite movies, which just so happens to be a movie about a race horse, Mariah’s Storm (Sonador), that is based on a true story, based on a horse that won the Breeder’s Cup, after suffering and recovering from a broken cannon bone caused by falling during a previous race. Although the movie may not reflect directly on my essay, the quote reflects on all areas of horse racing.
I believe illegal street racing should be taken more serious and should be better contained and cops should be stricter because illegal street racing is very dangerous and it can even be deadly at times. It is also against the law to street race, speed , and it can also cause problems not only for the law with people but also for people with other people so therefore I believe cops should be way more stricter about illegal street racers. Racers is going to increase. Not only are they injuring, killing people but they are also Illegal Street racing is a very dangerous and at times it can also be deadly.
One important thing was to never give up, to keep pushing yourself so you can see the beauty in running. Another thing was that quote was true; I had a desire to keep pushing, I dreamed about getting a new personal record, and the vision was finishing strong and happy and making everybody proud. Finally the last thing I learned was there will always be somebody there to believe in you but if you don’t believe in yourself then what is the point of you trying? You need to believe in yourself so you can accomplish your goal in
“JV, you have ten minutes!”, said the announcer after the gun went off. “C’mon ladies, we need to stride out and circle up.”, I said to all of my teammates. Kelsey was the one who led us in prayer that day. Lining up anticipating the start of the race really gives me an adrenaline rush. “Runners to your mark…Get set..”, in the booming voice of the official. Boom! The sound of the gun indicating the start of the race. My first mile is always a little too fast. I can’t help it though, my nerves are going crazy. “You’re at 7:10 Alexis! Keep that pace! You can do it girl!”, I heard from Jane. That first mile went by so quick. Now I was onto my second, the one that always killed me. A big hill was coming up, and I knew I would have a hard time making it up it and then recovering. The whole time all I heard was, “Push through, almost there! C’mon girl, finish strong!”, from Jane of course. Before I knew it I was in the last 400 meters of the race, fighting for that 15th place medal with the girl next to me. “Alexis, kick it NOW! Last 400, this is your race, get that girl!”, said Jane. I pushed through and had a strong finish, beating the girl that Jane encouraged me to catch.
Training for a marathon is a huge commitment which calls for a large amount of time, energy, and physical strain. The key to training is staying motivated, practicing safe and smart training, and following a nutritious diet(“How to Train for a Marathon”). Fi...
Running is the locomotion that allows humans and animals to swiftly navigate on foot. It was once the only way of transportation for humans to race across land to come to a destination. According to history, Pheidippides, a Greek soldier ran in the Battle of Marathon to Athens to deliver a message of victory in 490 B.C., dying shortly after shouting the Greek word for victory: “Niki!” ("Run the Original Historical Course," 2013). Pheidippides’ 24.85 mile run inspired the creation of the marathon race which was introduced in the 1896 Athens Olympic Games as a popularizing event; an additional 2 miles was added to the 1908 London Olympic Games course so that the runners could finish in front of the Royal family’s viewing box ("Run the Original Historical Course," 2013). Long distance running has since developed into a craze that stands unshakeable in the 21st century. People of all ages and backgrounds now participate in long distance running, which typically ranges from the mile, 1600 meters, to the 26.2 miles, 40,000 meter marathon, making it a widely popular activity (Liberman 193-205).
