Paid maternity leave in most countries is as common as commuting from one place to another, but in the U.S., it’s as rare as eating healthy. Maternity is the stage in life in which a woman is pregnant and the period shortly after childbirth. Paid maternity leave is the paid time off from work that a mother gets to care for her newborn. Paid maternity leave could also apply to a family that just adopted. Paid maternity leave gives mothers the opportunity to recover from the childbirth, nurture their newborn, and take their babies to checkups regularly. Paid maternity leave also helps the economy, and an overall happier population.though some efforts have been made, guaranteed paid maternity leave will have many benefits such as providing economic growth, health benefits, and lowering the rate of infant mortality.

Americans may think, “wow.. six weeks of paid leave seems great!” and though six weeks isn’t quite enough compared to other countries around the world such as Norway, Austria, and Hungary, it is certainly better than no time at all. Before, mothers would only get 12 weeks of unpaid leave, so this is a great advancement. It is also important for the father to be present during this time to help out with the daunting task of caring for a newborn. As a developed country, it should be one of our priorities to improve the paid maternity leave policies.
