Pros And Cons Of Being A Military Brat

Being a young black man from Chicago, Illinois is not always perceived as a positive thing due to the stereotypes people are consumed with these days. In most instances, many people take things viewed or heard from the media and automatically assume actions of others as a reflection of me, but that is not true. Fortunately, I was not apart of all the violence in my hometown when I was little, because my parents ensured I was not around to see it. My father joined the military when I was only three years old as a step to move us away from all the bad things happening in Chicago. I have learned over the years that being a military brat is great; but it is not always as cool as people think it is. Yes, you get to travel the world, see new things, and other great benefits from the military, but, when you have a family member gone for extended periods of time to fight for the country, and you are constantly worried about them...that outweighs all the benefits because you are too scared to enjoy any of the other stuff.

The most devastating move of all is the one when you have to leave all of the friends that you now consider family, especially when you do not have any of your actual family in that area. You get extremely comfortable having them around for so long; and then one day, you have to leave them all behind. It is easy to keep in contact with them, but it really is not the same because you miss hanging out with them and just being around them. After the move, you have to start completely over first with adjusting to a whole new environment, then to the new people you encounter, and eventually, a whole new school. I generally do not have trouble adjusting to different places; I just do not like having to start over. Change is not fun at
