Proposal for Reparations of African Americans
Due to the fact that many African-Americans cannot trace their genealogy
back more than three generations, It would be extremely difficult to distinguish
between those who are descended from Freemen and those descended from Slaves.
Therefore, although it should have some impact on reparations, we must take into
account those who cannot trace their genealogy( approximately 3/4th of African-
Americans). We also must remember that in essence, no African-Americans were
completely free. Many blacks, Freeman and Slaves alike were lynched, falsely
imprisoned, raped, murdered, and subject to sub-human treatment. It is almost
impossible to estimate the economic hardship caused by slavery and the aftermath
that followed. To this day the African-American family still suffers from the
aftermath of slavery. We see it in the form of Poverty, under-education,
Discrimination, and Black on Black crime. Consider that Blacks are seriously
under-represented in many of our nations top fields. Less than .05 percent of
African-Americans are CEO's in corporate America. Blacks are also a rarity in
Law, Medicine, and higher education, What follows is my estimation of the
reparations needed.
1st generation descendant of slave: 500,000 of Freeman: 350,000 2nd
generation descendant of slave: 350,000 of Freeman: 225,000 3rd
generation descendant of slave: 225,000 of Freeman: 180,000 4th generation

Alternatively, since it was initially the ancestors of Caucasian’s that enslaved African’s their descendents should not have to compensate African Americans for what they performed. The descendents did not have any direct involvement in any way and can not change the actions of their past and should not be held liable. For over 200 years people of African descent were enslaved by Anglo-Saxons, having to endure painful hardships and not really even having an identity. After the Emancipation Proclamation they were supposedly "free" but were still considered a lesser people by many white Americans, even to the present day. But the question that has been posed and that we have read about is whether or not black Americans should receive monetary compensation for their hardships.
So why shouldn't the great-great grandchildren of those who worked for free and were deprived of education and were kept in bondage not be compensated? Why should American taxpayers who never owned slaves pay for the sins of ancestors they don't even know? Ask one question and it leads to another. How would the economy be affected? How do you put a price tag on over two centuries of legalized inhumanity? In what form would reparations be paid? How would you establish who is a descendant? Questions start debates.
“After 250 years of enslavement in America, African Americans were still terrorized in Deep South; they were pinned to the ghettos, overcrowded, overcharged, discriminated, and undereducated”. The best solution is to owe them reparations. To aid them out of their unjust inherit status. The novel is based on real life situations of many African Americans that had to face during slave, and post slave era in the United States of America. The purpose is to show that not having reparations for the African Americans lead to many downsides to the nation’s inequalities. In the novel “The Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, he uses just ethics and remorse obligation, to demonstrate the nation should to pay for the damage done to the black community.
In an article by ABC news it was written that “there’s no disputing that African American suffered centuries of enslavement. What’s far less certain, however is what kind of debt is owed to the descendants of those slaves.” They also said “many group of influential lawyers and scholars have profited from slavery.” This goes to show that the people responsible for the enslavement of hundreds of people are profiting from slavery, and that if they did want to pay reparations, they’re unsure how to give it. The article then goes to mention other cases of reparation that have been paid like Germany paying $60 billion to holocaust survivors, and the united states paying $20,000 to over 100,000 Japanese Americans sent to internment camp during world war
Unlike the original document which consisted of Jefferson describing physical characteristics of Blacks and Indians and how he perceived their lifestyles. The second document “Thomas Jefferson on the Indian’s Future” actually talks about Jefferson’s political stance regarding the Indians, which is essentially he wants to steel all their land. In his letter to Harrison Jefferson talks in detail about his plan to force the Indians into giving up their land. He states, “we shall push our trading uses, and be glad to see the good influential individuals among them run in debt, because we observe that when these debts get beyond what the individuals can pay they become willing to lop them off by a cession of lands.”(7) Jefferson writes that eventually the settlements will eventually
Slaves gained their freedom, temporarily enjoyed the moment, but then found out they were eventually slaves again through economic systems prejudiced against them. Reconstruction allegedly emancipated all slaves and established citizenship to African Americans who had been perpetually controlled with the chains of captivity. As the years go by we can see the aftermath of what slavery, segregation and racism toward African Americans have done to Blacks. African Americans have suffered many brutal treatment that has affected us physically and mentally and we are still dealing with the repercussion of the many years of oppression. The Declaration of Independence was written hundreds of years ago stating all men are equal but African Americans are still socially and racially unequal to White America. Until now Blacks have been given insufficient credit of the basis of where humanity and civilization started. Throughout our educational history we’ve learned that the Egyptians created Egypt not including the Egyptians were African Americans and we’ve also learned from textbooks the European’s created many inventions, founded many countries and established these intelligent philosopher’s and writers we study from today basically making Europeans the superior race for many Countries but not even mentioning the contributions of African Americans and what they have done and how much they have accomplished for civilization. When we look at film and literature we can dissect and repair the image of African Americans by looking at written evidence, documentaries and movies to see the hidden truth.
After the Civil War ended in 1865, a big question was left: what does the future look like for freed slaves in America? For so long - 246 years, since the first African slave arrived in Virginia in 1619 - Southern African Americans were forced into slavery. However, in 1856, as a result of the Union’s win in the American Civil War and the determination of many, they were finally free - at least legally. The Civil War left a big dent on the South and tension was rising between whites and blacks. In the meantime, African Americans needed help, or else they would fall into the trenches of the American society once again. This was a time of crucial social change for Southern blacks, and the effects of Reconstruction on white and black race relations in America are still apparent and alive today.
Some reparations may be helpful in achieving its goals, while some are not. Ultimately, the differences matter for the legitimacy of the present case. Those with a conservative stance on politics will use monetary compensation as a plausible argument against reparations. How would this process work? Would one have to prove African lineage in order to receive monetary compensation? Furthermore, would monetary compensation bring about a complete “acceptance of our collective biography and its consequences,” the broader point of Coates’ essay? One can easily surmise that there can be no price that can fully capture the historical plight of African-Americans. During the reconstruction era and the settlement of the western United States, Native Americans were treated horribly. They were driven from their lands, forced to assimilate to Euro-American culture, and promised treaties and contracts that would almost certainly be broken by the US government. Indians were seen as a problem to the average white settler. First, the “problem” was perpetuated through lies, and conflicts started by white men that were blamed on the Indians. Then, as light was shed on the true story of the Indians many “solutions” were proposed to fix the problem. However, none of these solutions would prove to solve anything as shown by the state of Native Americans today.

A. The Reconstruction period took place after the Civil war from 1865-1877 by Abraham Lincoln to rebuild the South that occupied Union soldiers. There were many changes that affected African-Americans, such as amendments 13-15, which gave them certain rights. This period was very important for Blacks in America, it was the time when they were completely free from slavery and the citizenship changed how they lived their lives. They were given civil rights, which gave them the right to sue or sit on juries, voting, and owning property. This time frame also gave us the creation of the first public school systems in the South. There were changes in the labor force and working conditions, which came about with sharecropping.
