To organize and complete our project in a timely, quality and financially responsible manner, we need to schedule our project carefully. Effective project scheduling plays a crucial role in ensuring project success. To keep our project on track, we need to set realistic time frames, assign resources appropriately and manage quality to decrease product errors (Duggan, n.d. para. 1).
We should strive to work smarter and not harder, and proper planning will make our job easier in the long run. We should ensure that we are following established practices and using standardized tools during the planning stage and throughout the life of the project. Managing in a matrix is efficient and can be effective if definitions and relationships are clear and mutually agreed upon. Work streams are functional teams contributing to a project or business process. When the stream cuts itself off from the other work streams and thinks of itself as a fully autonomous independent entity, it turns into a silo. Silos are great for storing grain, but, in organizations, silos are dysfunctional. Healthy work streams contribute to success. They recognize that their work is only of real value because it contributes to project success. For example, you may want to time-box a meeting to be 30 minutes long to help ensure that the meeting will begin and end on time with no exceptions. When you time-box an event the result is a natural tendency to focus on the most important items first. If you time-box a meeting, you would expect that the absolutely required content of the meeting be completed before the end of the meeting. Other items that are not as important may get moved to another meeting. In essence, time-boxing is a constraint used by teams to help focus on value (Telerik, 2013 para. 1).
One important time-box that agile promotes is the project itself. Agile teams prefer to have a time-boxed project since it offers a fixed schedule and a fixed team size. With these project constraints the team can better work with the customers to maintain focus on value, which ensures the team is building and delivering the most valuable work as soon as possible, leaving the less critical tasks to the end. Time-boxed projects may mean that some requirements won’t get implemented; however, it will help to ensure that what is developed is truly the most essential of the required features (Telerik, 2013 para.
