While completing Project #2 over the past five weeks I have learned a number of lessons from which I can apply to future group work situations. The most notable lessons that I learned from this project are the following: how to be a manager, how to work with others that do not have the same work ethic as myself, and most of all, how to fire someone from the group. Each lesson learned will help me in my future as an engineer; learning how to choose trustworthy hard working individuals as well as being able to manage those said individuals.
Group management has never been one of my strong characteristics, as I feel more comfortable doing grunt work and having personal tasks given to me. Rather than making sure others are staying focused with the tasks I assigned for them. Group projects are much more enjoyable when tasks are evenly distributed to each group member. I have learned that if you are willing to let go of some of the control, group members are typically very willing to make a positive contribution to the project. This is especially true when you are allowed to pick the members of the group. As long as everyone is striving to do their best, there is almost always a positive outcome. Nevertheless, these groups generally still have one or two people who always step up to take charge and make sure that everyone is on the same page.
At Delta High school, a student may choose to either work alone or to collaborate with a group in order to finish a project. Both choices offer pros and cons when it comes to efficiency and the quality of work. In a group setting, students may get sidetracked, or the group itself may not be able to function properly. On the other hand, group projects allow broader opinions and valuable peer reviews. Choosing to do independent work will benefit the student’s work ethic, but will also increase the work load. So which is the better choice? The answer is found in the history of the world’s progress in science and technology. Technology does not excel solely from independent work, nor does
I work well in group situations. I always try to encourage all members to participate and contribute. It is interesting to note that in most situations, I tend to be one of the group leaders. I do have a strong personality. Yet I try not to come across as controlling or bossy.
Throughout the BSN program, I worked on several group projects, (Appendices D & D1), which require effective communication, collaboration, and negotiation among classmates. Working together on all these projects reinforced the necessity of these three skills to prepare successful presentations.
It is important to distinguish the difference between teams and groups. The main difference is that teams work altogether toward a common goal whereas groups can work altogether but for their own objective. It is important to highlight that a group does not necessary need a leader to follow but a team does and this leader will set directions to achieve the goal. In teams people are more committed as they share their ideas, they know the purpose of what they are doing and what the others are doing, they understand better individual objectives and team objectives whereas in groups, generally people are just told what they have to do without further explanations. Because in a team people get to know each other, it builds trust and enhances communication but in groups, people do not really know each other, do not trust or communicate effectively with each other. In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.

I would really like to work together again but there are some aspects I would like to be changed which will improve to make our group even more successful. First, making plan of actions and creating deadlines, so everyone will be a little bit more responsible. Second, change cultural issue to being late to every meeting, as waiting to others can be disturbing and irritating. The last thing is suggestion to be more open and not being shy to display thoughts and opinions openly, which might make solutions proposed more creative. Every group member had her/his own place, duty and ready to display help if something was wrong or misunderstood. Supportive climate lead to initiation of friendship among members and that is in my opinion how group should look and act.
Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting. I believe throughout this process of being part of a group as a member and leader has help me further define the roles that I will play in group counseling in the future. The evolution that I am seeing are an abundance of growth in areas that I thought I was already comfortable in such as being an active listener and co-leading. I see that there are more to becoming a powerful leader and facilitator. There are various aspects of becoming a well rounded group leader as learning the skills to endure especially building your endurance. Also, being able to take risks, being competent and confidence in your ability to lead a group of any sorts. Moreover, I have found that my communication style has shifted especially learning about the process in which you communicate your informal introduction as well as the lingo that is being used as a counselor. A group can be define as ‘any number of people who (1) interact with one another; (2) are psychologically aware of one another and (3) perceive themselves to be a group’ (Mullins, L, 2007, p.299). Certain task can only be performed by combined effort of a group. Organisation can use groups to carry out projects, which will help to achieve its overall aim. However, for the group to be successful they must understand what is expected of them and have the right skill to complete the task. . (Mullins, L, 2006)

There is a natural tendency for people to gather in groups for mutually beneficial purposes. Through groups, individuals accomplish goals and relate to others in innovative and productive ways (McClure, 1990). People would not survive, let alone thrive, without involvement in groups. This reliance and interdependence is seen in all types of groups from those that are primarily task-oriented to those that are basically therapeutic. In order to be effective, group leaders must be aware of the power and potency of groups.
“Please don’t make me work in a group!” is the first thing that enters my mind when an instructor announces a project. More often than not, I am distracted and irritated by my group members. Harsh, I know, but my experience has always been that one person, usually me, ends up doing most of the work. I like to be in control, but I do not like picking up others’ slack. I am also an introvert, and I think more clearly and purposefully when I understand the task but am permitted to sort things out on my own.
I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. Sometimes waves need to be made to better the project. And third, watch for similar frustrations with my students and intervene before it gets too serious.
In conclusion, I really did enjoy the this group project. We had great group chemistry, an interesting topic, an effective and consistent preparation period. That sounds like a formula to a successful group project to me. This is probably the most enjoyable group work experience for me at Augustana so far. If I could, I would do it
