Due to the profession of counseling being the youngest of the helping professions, some researchers believe that the development of a professional identity remains one of the major struggles for the profession today (Spurgeon, 2012). From the readings and lectures in class, I understand professional identity to be the developmental process in which an individual reaches an understanding of their role in a specific profession which enables them to articulate how one perceives themselves within an occupational context to others. As Dr. Darcy described in class, professional identity consists of one’s: practice standards, research and training/preparation in conjunction with their own self-concept based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives and experiences.
