A hominin is part of the family Hominini and is classified to be the most similar to a human. There are 8 traits that were discussed in class that give primates their features to be called primates. They are opposable big toes and prehensile thumbs, flat nails and fingernails, locomotion in hind-limb dominated, olfactory apparatus, vision is highly developed, small litters, brain is large, and molars are unspecialized. These traits define primates, but are not limited to humans alone. The book says, “primates are a rather nondescript mammalian order that cannot be unambiguously characterized by a single derived feature shared by all members” (Silk & Boyd, 2015).
To begin with, to be considered to be a hominin the species is closely related to humans, or possibly the direct decent of humans. Although they share many features with humans, most mammals share features with them as well. This is stated in the book and paraphrased as sharing four limbs, five fingers on each hand, a thick coat of fur, and also giving birth to a live young. “In the last decade, fossil discoveries of several kinds of creatures have begun to shed light on this important period in the history of human lineage” (Silk & Boyd, 2015). The book says that in recent years scientist have gotten closer and closer to finding out what separated hominins from apes. The number one reason is bipedalism.
