The media is a form of communicating and socializing with people all around the world. Many things such a breaking news, or new information about your favorite celebrities are constantly being reported. These are things that are in our everyday life, but should be taken more seriously. An article written about the number of school shootings titled, “ No, there haven’t been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong” , serves as just another source that proves that the media is not trustworthy. The article states that after a nonprofit group of Everytown, that works to prevent gun violence, and also tallies school shootings, many people and news broadcasters used the number 18 to describe the number of school shootings in 2018.

There have been many horror stories in the news about mass shootings at schools. The public, and even the president of the United States, is asking if anything can be done to prevent these tragedies. There are many theories on why students kill their peers at schools; these range from increased violence in video games and movies to bullying troubles at school. Almost always, the perpetrator suffers from some form of mental illness (Khadaroo). Because of this, motives for these crimes are extremely difficult to discern. Although the theories for the causes of this dilemma are tenuous at best, the effects are very perceptible. Can anything be done to prevent these massacres? School shootings are a complex problem that cannot always be prevented, but there are a number of actions we can take to reduce the frequency and extent of the damage caused. These actions include placing more restrictions on firearms, creating detection programs for shooters, hiring more counselors for unstable students, and placing guards or police in schools. School shootings are a serious problem, and a solution is needed in order to prevent these calamities.
From 1980’s till now, there are has been many school shootings. Many researchers have made many hypotheses as to why these occur. The most tragic shooting took place in Sandy Hook Elementary. 2. I believe that we should prevent shootings from happening in schools because schools are meant to be a safe education environment for students and faculty. In the article “Gun Control Can Prevent School Shootings,” Bennett shares the effects of gun violence in the past, present, and future. The Sandy Hook shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 when twenty children and six adult staff members were killed. Barely a month after the shooting, eleven of the families affected by the shooting went to meet privately with Joe Biden, and members from the Congress and cabinet. Bennett stated, “They were preparing to wade into some of the roughest waters in American politics: the gun debate.” President Obama gave a speech in Connecticut vowing to fight for change. And as Bennett put it, “Members of Congress started acting as parents instead of politicians.” Bennett explained to the families that they couldn't get rid of assault weapons or high capacity ammunition magazines, no matter how bad the shooting was. The families got angry and stated they did not want to know what they couldn't do, but what they could do to honor their children.
Gun control is both a crime issue, as well as a safety issue. It can range from moderate to extreme. Gun control goes as back as the 17th century where Japan was using guns for war making as to current tragedies occurring in schools. Guns have never disappeared, they have only multiplied in numbers to numerous amount of guns, ranging from small to big. Gun control isn't only a problem but it can also be solution depending on how it is being used and the person using it. Gun control can be controlled with many methods but in the end it matters how the person is going to use the weaponry.
According to the Harvard Politics, there were fifty five school shootings between November 1,991 and July 16, 2013 (Gupta). However, since 2013, there have been 142 school shootings (Mosendz). If the ratio would have stayed the same between 1991to 2013 and 2013 to 2016, eight school shootings would be expected to have taken place during 2013 and 2016, not 142. School shootings are becoming more of a problem throughout the years. More and more innocent students and teachers are dying due to school shootings. This is not fair to those that are being shot, or to the family and friends of the ones being shot. Often, tragic events like this are hard for someone to overcome, therefore leading them to continuously thinking about what happened. I thoroughly
There have been 175 school shootings in the United States since 2013 (175 School Shootings). Mass school shootings have become an immense problem in America in the past few decades. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of cases of school shootings and this is becoming a problem in society and a problem for school children and staff. There are too many people who are able to map out a plan and shoot innocent school children. Too many lives are being taken due to school shooters and America as a whole needs to come up with a plan to stop such crimes. The problem with school shootings will never be fully eradicated, however, there are measures we can take to prevent these actions by creating stricter gun laws, becoming more aware of unusual behavior, and providing better security in schools.
The U.S. has endured more than 70 school shootings with a death toll exceeding 230. (Locked Down & Loaded). In a recent report issued by xx, the guidelines emphasize that there is no foolproof way to identify a potential active shooter or to respond to the event once it's begun. Each case is unique, though there are some signs that have been identified by the FBI and others -- acquisitions of weapons, or fascination with previous shootings, for instance -- as potential tip-offs (Zubrzycki, Jaclyn, and Nirvi Shah). But what happens when the shooting rampage has begun? The guide releasd by President Barack Obama, instructs people to learn the best steps for survival if a situation does erupt; and work with law enforcement during the response to help save your life or the person(s) you are helping (Zubrzycki, Jaclyn, and Nirvi Shah). The training and recommendations to teachers and staff to hide, confront, wait for law enforcement, but do the numbers suggest this is the most effective way to reduce injuries, deaths, stop the active shooter from continuing his rampage? Should the introduction of more guns in schools should be looked at as an effective deterrent to active shooters.
School shootings are tragic occurrences that have become far too common in our culture today by many standards. some state legislators are considering a new approach to the problem: licenses that allow educators to carry concealed weapons onto campus. A solution that would stop school shootings in a lot of places.
The issue of school administrators and teachers carrying guns has become an actual controversial topic in our society today. School shootings similar to the ones in Sandy Hook and Florida, has also become common in our society. Arming teachers is only one of the solutions that states are considering and some have already commenced the process of proposing this to become a law. This issue needs to be thoroughly researched and all aspects need to be considered and evaluated. This controversial issue heavily depends on what changes to security measures and policies will be put in place at schools, if teachers are required to be armed will training be provided, and more importantly, will the teachers have a say in the new policies, will their voices be heard.
