What is Media? Did you ever wonder how we can find out information we need, or just want to know what is going on around the world? We use it in all different types of ways to retain the knowledge and communication that we use on a day to day basis. Media is one of the many ways of communication that is used to receive and deliver information to influence people across the world. The use of media is communication being advertised through televisions, radios, internet, magazines and newspapers. These are by far the main resources of how we use media to reach our audiences. Media can be classified as a forum of information that is ready to be released into the world. How we do it is entirely up to the person who withholds that information. When I drive to work in the morning, I turn the radio on to hear any information about traffic. The radio is my way of finding out, what is being broadcasted for me in the attempt to be aware of any problems on highway traffic accidents, and is there an alternate road I can take if needed for safety. The radio helps me in the morning for bett...

In other words, the media only tells us only what they want us to hear; which, may or may not be the truth or include the entire story. The media is always looking for the next best story and the competition to be the first one on the scene can be intense. A documentary by 9.14 Productions tells the story of a man and his art collection; The Barnes Foundation.
forms. Media is commonly defined as being a channel of communication. “Our everyday lives are saturated by radio, television, newspapers, books, the Internet, movies, recorded music, magazines, and more. In the twenty-first century, we navigate through a vast mass media environment unprecedented in human history.” (Croteau and Hoynes, p. 3)This is also true when we say media companies do not impose their own control upon the information being supplied to media users. Since many people use media frequently, we can assume that it affects people. According to the text book Media/Society: Industries, Images, and Audience, by David Croteau and William Hoynes the effects of media are determined and explored through the main topics of homogenization of media, social inequality and media, and the effects of media on social relationships.
When I envision living life without Social Networking, I envision more time to think about important things, not status updates or how many likes I may get on a certain post. I see myself being satisfied with what I have, where I am, and who I am. After experiencing a fast from social media I became aware of the negative and dangerous effects it had on myself and relationships I had with others. Social networking occupied and numbed me from reality, it was a treacherous resting place. Life is more than getting a certain amount of likes or having a certain amount of followers. As defined: social networking is the use of dedicated websites and applications to communicate informally with users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself. The definition sounds innocent, but what it doesn’t include is the addiction it brings that holds you captive without being aware.

Over these past 5 days I have been asked to not only record, but check my consumption of my media intake. At first I thought “ this assignment seems odd, I certainly don 't use or interact with media 8 hours on average like studies say. There 's no way”. But after these five days I can say without a doubt that my initial observations were way off target. Thought the monitoring and recording process I found that on a daily average I am exposed to about 7 hours of media a day. A number I thought I would be nowhere near at the start of the 5 day process. But by digging deeper and deeper into my actual recordings I found many of the answers to not only why my consumption was so high, but also what forms of media were making it such a high number.
One thousand six hundred and eighteen minutes. One thousand six hundred and eighteen was spent by me, on my computer, in three days. That seems to be a lot of time when you think about it, probably just about twenty seven hours. How could all that time be spent at as single machine like a PC. One of the best features of the PC is that you can use many different media forms at one time. I use my PC for communication with my boyfriend who goes to SUNY Albany, to check my email for letters of annoyance from my parents, and to provide me with entertainment. Sometime i also use it for work, but that doesn’t happen to frequently. The best part about that though is that i can do all those things all at the same time. Usually i turn my PC on when i wake up and off when i go to bed. My computer saves me time and money and makes my life so much happier.
