Maintaining a positive attitude is the key to success in life. However, a positive mindset alone is useless unless it is coupled with dedication, perseverance, and desire. Positivity, if coupled with these other traits, can allow you to surpass adversity, impediments, and personal goals. Negative attitudes, oppositely, can detract from achieving success because a negative mindset can often lead you to losing sight of the goal or giving up easily. Last year, I was diagnosed with a virus called mononucleosis ("mono") -- symptoms of which include chronic fatigue, sore throat, and fever. I had mono for five months, during which I played my favorite sports: cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. Mono made running seem almost impossible; I was always tired and could no longer run like I used …show more content…
The doctor advised me to take a break from running for a little while and try to rest as much as possible. Being told that you can't do what you love is one of the hardest things in life, therefore, I soon realized I had no choice but to stay positive. It was difficult to go slow and steady while my team was running hard around me but I took my training one day at a time, one mile at a time, one step at a time, so I could reach tiny personal goals and slowly recover back to full health. Keeping a positive attitude was key to improving both my health and training because it allowed me to persevere through the fatigue and trump all of the negative thoughts in my head that said, "I can't do it". While I didn't have the best seasons last year, my positive attitude kept me working hard over the summer and through the fall and brought me all the way to the indoor track state championship. A couple summers ago, my mom went to a leadership conference for her work. The conference took place over the course of a few days and working adults from a wide variety of occupations attended to improve their leadership skills in
In the chapter “ The Upside of Dreaming” from her book Rethinking Positive Thinking, Gabriele Oettingen explains how positive fantasies are beneficial. Oettingen started out with a story of a college graduate. The college graduate Rachael was dealing with a heartbroken experience with seeing her boyfriend going to jail for selling drugs. Rachael felt as if she had a stay by her boyfriend’s side. She dreamt that the judge or the prosecutor was saying something bad about her boyfriend, Tim and giving him a lot of time in jail. Rachel wanted to defend him, but she knew couldn’t help him.Tim finally went to jail.
Discipline is important in maintaining a positive classroom environment and influencing a child’s development. During my field experience at S.H. Elementary, I have observed Mrs. Branson using various techniques to reinforce positive behavior in her 3rd grade classroom. Mrs. Branson’s teachers 3rd grade in a charter school located in the south suburbs of Minneapolis. Her class consist of 23 diverse student learners from various racial, ethical, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Each student acquires individual wants and needs, and exhibits a range of behaviors. Mrs. Branson practices operant conditioning techniques to acquire the good behavior she wants and needs from her students.
Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.
Having a system for managing students’ behavior is important for the students and for the teacher. Students need to be acknowledged when they do something well so they can do it again. Even as adults we sometimes need acknowledgement. I know at my job we are always acknowledged when we get a customer to apply for a credit or debit card. If the students are not being acknowledge for their good deeds they wouldn’t want to try harder to do that same behavior again or even try harder. They need a system that challenges them and lets them know what would happen if they behave well. Having an effective system in place also keeps the teacher prepared for certain situations and with a system in place the students will strive to do well so they can receive the benefits of the system in place.
Have you ever wondered what mindset you have, a fixed or growth? A fixed mindset is when you feel your abilities have a certain peak or it is just stuck at a certain level. A growth mindset is when you feel like you can do better and overcome a certain obstacle. Well in flipped by Wendelin Van Draanan The character Bryce has a fixed mindset and here’s why.
When given the word mindset some people often believe that there can only be a fixed mindset, but this is not the case there is something also known as a growth mindset (or grit). Once a young child begins to grow not only do they learn new things, but they also choose whether or not they want to take in these new ideas. Although, some may confuse the two, the difference is very simple; a fixed mindset means that you believe one thing, and you may also have a “natural” born talent for certain things, where as a growth mindset means that you display perseverance while taking on new roles or acting on new ideas in your life. While reading Shakespeare's Othello, I've come
I took an assessment after watching a TED TALKS video by Professor Carol Dweck. It stated that I have what they call a growth mindset. A growth mindset means you’re open to new and challenging things, while fixed mindset means you are not. If you have a fixed mindset you most likely care more about grades and not as much learning. With a growth mindset you want to do well but you care more about learning then getting the best grades possible.
I devoted so much time and effort into that sport and to stop playing seriously like this was heart breaking. I listened to all my family and friends about how fast I was and decided to try out track. I knew that I wouldn’t hurt by doing this and I didn’t want to stop playing sports. I always thought how track would be a sport where if you have natural talent, you will be good. I decided to give it a go and after running over a mile in the first practice I was a little reluctant to keep going. I couldn’t keep running all these long distances when I’m not in shape for it. I kept telling myself this so I would just keep pushing through it. My mind was in a million places questioning if I should have just stuck with playing basketball even though I didn’t find it was fun as it used to be. So, after a few months of hard training and practice, I stuck with track. My coach, my family and my friends all persuaded me to do it because they thought I would do good and strive throughout the season. This was a hard change for
A motive is what pushes a person into doing something. Motivation is one of the most required traits to being successful. It pushes you to the extra mile and it certainly is something that should never be forgotten. In Zig Ziglar’s book, Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World , “Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis” (p203) indicates that motivation has a very short life span and that it should be constantly available because motivation comes in different levels. For example, physiological needs, social interaction and needs of respect from oneself and others. As Abraham Maslow stated in his Hierarchy that “People pay attention to higher needs only when lower
There are many research findings on the way parents can influence a child’s mindset. Whether it be a fixed or a growth mindset, researchers say they are obtained early in life with the help of parents. A fixed mindset is a mentality that intelligence has a cap and once someone has reached that cap, it cannot go further. Intelligence is fixed and they do not believe they can get any smarter. A growth mindset is the mentality that one’s intelligence is always growing. They can achieve more and learn as much as possible since there is no cap. Through parent’s actions it is likely to predict what kind of mindset their children have, specifically the parent’s helpfulness. Research has also found that parent’s praise
Positive psychology can definitely help change ones perspective on many situations and teach them how to make the best out of negative circumstances in their life. Having a positive outlook on life is great for someone’s wellbeing because it helps reduce stress and it can also improve your health. Before taking this course, it was somewhat difficult for me to see the positive in many problems that I faced. Now that I have completed this course, I can now look back at situations in my life and manage them more appropriately.
I believe in positive thinking because it is like a small plant which can grow huge with the help of some fertilizer and regular care. Similarly, the more I use positive thinking, the better I will be at it, and the more it will grow. I am not saying that it is easy to think positively all the time, but I believe that most of my thoughts and ideas should reflect happiness and positivity. To obtain happiness one needs to learn to be optimistic in even the most difficult situations. Positive thinking helps me find a way in tough situations.
My coaches decided to intensify my training regimen in the hopes that I could compete in the Olympics the following year. One day during a very intense track practice I collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where I was told that my blood cells were sickling. This happened because I am a carrier for sickle cell anemia. This would forever alter my approach to training thus making it more difficult for me to achieve my Olympic dreams. The harder I trained to improve my time, the more my body broke down. It was like climbing a mountain of
However, emerging evidence show that positive psychology interventions are quite effective for individuals suffering from mental and physical disorders. The findings provided in this paper have significant implications for clinical practice and therapeutic interventions for patients with a variety of chronic diseases since most of them are lifelong and debilitating, causing many psychological problems. Integrative positive psychology allows practitioners and scholars to study positive and negative well-being together, as well as apply the findings into the clinical settings. I argue that looking at the research results, the use of positive psychology interventions, such as well-being therapy, cognitive restructuring, positive reappraisal, groups interventions based on positive psychology principles within populations of individuals suffering from chronic illnesses and/or disability should be effective and could lead to positive treatment outcomes. I believe that the goal of positive interventions should be focused on helping individuals with pessimism and hopelessness develop positive attitudes of illness and/or disability to maximize adaptation and psychological
If you've ever felt perplexed about how to be more positive, you'll be reassured to know it's very much under your own control.
