Population growth in Australia has always been a controversial topic as the recent patterns of migration and fertility has tapped into range of public concerns. Most politicians want a more sustainable approach to population growth such as how the environment, urban infrastructure, and social cohesion would be affected by diverse population and how immigration would provide necessary skills shortages that could fuel economic growth and development. This projected population number is down from a once predicted 16 billion (Baird) and while some are not concerned, others are worried about any increase in population. Baird and Furedi concur that a concern for population growth has been around since mathematician Thomas Malthus, in 1798, warned that overpopulation could lead to “the collapse of society” (Furedi). Furedi claims that too much human life is being used as an excuse, by population control supporters, for the world’s current and future problems. Baird tries to discover if “the current panic over population growth is reasonable.” For Ehrlich and Ehrlich the concern over population growth is very real, and they reinforce and support their book “calling attention to the demographic element in the human predicament” (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 63). While taking different approaches to their articles, the authors offer their perspectives on population growth, population control and the environmental impacts of a growing population.

Also, here women are not educated, as well as the developed countries, and there is no or very little knowledge of contraceptives.
I believe the push for a ‘big Australia’ is perpetuated by large companies and wealthy capitalists with their own interests at heart and are the only people to benefit from a rapidly rising population. I do not believe that a higher population rate equals a beneficial economic growth because of the various costs associated with having such a rapid growth. As well as issues outlined previously other impacts include a higher crime rate, decreased open space impacting on mental health and social tensions and environmental disaster cleanup costs. Balancing Australia’s population size with renewable resources is the only way to ensure the survival of a healthy ecosystem and a having a good quality of life within our communities. By raising the number for refugee and humanitarian placements, Australia would be fulfilling moral obligations and remain a diverse nation.
In order to solve the overpopulation issue, the government should pay great attention to it. Some policies, such as “ One China policy”, have already been made in China. They have already paid off. For instance, in 1994, the natural growth rate was 11.21, but in 1999 it was only 8.77 (SFPCC statistics). However, China still has a long way to go in this aspect, for the overpopulation is still serious now, just like what has been mentioned in the previous paragraphs.
The human population growth rate is an alarming issue that brings with it irreversible consequences, that will likely effect the way of life for future generations to come. With the serious incline in population statistics comes catastrophic processes such as global warming and deforestation that have major ‘knock on’ ramifications. It’s issues such as these that need to be considered when we think about the growth of the human population, and we must take into account why these issues are occurring. We must also explore the options available to us that may assist in limiting the problems, or eliminating them all together, to provide a better place, not only for us in existence now, but also those who will walk this earth in the future decades and centuries to come.
Population growth is the change in population over a period of time. It happens due to a number of factors such as standard of living, cultural factors, and government policies. When the standard of living become better such as the improvement of social conditions ( shelter, sanitation, clean water , health care and etc) death rate and birth rate reduce as more people become inclined to have fewer children.
