American Pop Art
“Pop Art is for Everyone” ~ Andy Warhol
Pop art traded the notion that elements of contemporary art could be elevated to art status allowing for the expression of bold new and challenging boundaries. Everyone at some point has viewed pop art in their lifetime. Pop art is a continually changing art form based on consumerism and forces the artists to keep up with the progression of marketing. Pop art in America emerged from artists who looked at bring representational art to the forefront. The use of impersonal irony and parody in pop art was used as symbolism. Pop art began in Britain in 1950 by a group of artists who called themselves the Independent Group consisting of young painters, writers, architects, sculptors, and critics wanting to challenge the traditional views of abstract expressionism. The movement was made official by Lawrence Alloway in the article, “The Arts and Mass Media.” (February 1958) Pop art values pop culture by not criticizing materialism and consumerism. Instead, pop art recognizes and embraces the united generation of shopping. Eduardo Paolozzi, the co-founder of the Independent Group, introduced ten titles called Bunk! consisting of items found in advertising, magazines, imagery, and television. This group created the term “Pop” defined as, “the sum of the arts designed for simultaneous consumption by a numerically large audience.” Paolozzi wrote the term “pop” in a little bubble on his art work from Bunk called, I Was a Rich Man’s Play Thing. Johnson was best friends with Warhol but did not seek fame. He created some of the earliest works of pop art but never had them published or seen until they were found after his death. Johnson was an Avant Garde artist. He focused on the process of art and not the final product. His most iconic work is a picture of James Dean smoking in which he added two round Lucky Strike cigarette ads on the picture to resemble Mickey Mouse ears. Johnson was also a pioneer in making pop art collages. Pop artists believe everything is interconnected and they express this in their artwork. They look for inspiration in the world around them.
There are art critics today who do not take pop art seriously or see it as artistic expression. Critics of pop art think it is gimmicky and mocks traditional art by making people question the hierarchy of art. However, pop art is the still the most popular and sought out art styles by collectors today. It is no doubt that pop art is so popular in a world full of consumption. History plays a very important role in the development of art and architecture. Over time people, events, and religion, have contributed to the evolution of art. Christianity has become a very common and well established religion, however, in the past it was hidden and a few people would worship this religion secretly. Gradually, Christianity became a growing religion and it attracted many converts from different social statuses. Christian art was highly influenced by the Greco-Romans, but it was immensely impacted by the establishment of the Edict of Milan in the year 313 AD. The Edict of Milan was so significant that scholars divide Christian art into two time periods, time before and after the Edict of Milan of 313.
Pop Art was a Modern art movement that emerged durring the mid-twentieth century in both England and America. It first began to gain recognition in the early 1950’s, after about twenty years of Abstract, as artists altered their attention and looked to change. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Pop Art became much more popular to the general public and successful for the movement’s artists due to the world growing tired of the repeditive forms of Abstract. Found in the Menil Collection, Seated Woman and Lavender Disaster are two examples of Pop Art. The comparison of these two pieces shows although they differ in medium and subject matter both Seated Woman and Lavender Disaster share common underlying themes possesed by all Pop Art.

In order to discuss pop art I have chosen to examine the work and to some extent lives of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol who were two of the main forces behind the American movement. I intend to reflect the attitudes of the public and artists in America at this time, while examining the growing popularity of pop art from its rocky, abstract expressionist start in the 1950s through the height of consumer culture in the 60s and 70s to the present day.
In the mid-1950s in Britain and late 1950s in the United States pop art is a movement that rise. Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton in Britain, and Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns in the United States Shaped the pop art movement among the early artists. Art itself refers not as much as to the attitude behind the art. Mass culture, such as advertising, comic books, and mundane cultural objects of pop art employs shape, form, value or line. As well as in expansion of those ideas, pop art interpreted as a reaction to the then-dominant idea of abstract expressionism. Art movement that precede postmodern art, or are some of the earliest examples of postmodern themselves are known as post art and minimalism.
Pop art is an experimental art which surfaced in Great Britain in the early 1950’s. One of the major art movements of the twentieth century, it came into its own in the United States in the late 1950’s. This art form incorporated photographs in ways that had not been utilized before. It utilized mass-culture imagery and iconography, in contrast to the traditional tendencies of fine art. Pop art is considered to be one of the last modern art movements and served as a precursor to postmodern art. The art form is characterized by themes and techniques derived from mass culture, including advertising and comic books. Perhaps one of the most famous Pop artists, is Andy Warhol.
2) Pop culture came from pop art (Danesi 4) and transformed the idea that the art reflected everyday roles and more playful than other artists, eventually it came down to it being a meaning for people as a whole. It evolved over time during the 1940s and 1950s that reflected everyday things in art, like Campbell’s soup (Danesi 5).
American pop culture is defined as cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people (Dictionary.com, LLC 2016). It serves to bring a large diverse population of individuals together with a unified cultural identity. For most of us, pop culture is what we fill our leisure time with. It can include a variety of sources such as entertainment like music, literature, theatre, art and food. Pop culture can also include the products consumers buy in order to participate in current tastes and fashions. Pop culture grows when a substantial population,
American economy in 1950s grew by 37%. During this period of time, a heightened economy led Americans to continuously spend more on consumer goods. The formation of Pop Art effectively influenced the greatest consumer economy of the world. The further development of materialism is due to an art movement during this time. The changes in art, especially in the development of modern art, led to the expanding negative impact of materialism in America. Andy Warhol, the leading figure of Pop art culture, portrayed consumerism through his art. Pop art shown in advertisements and comic books helped to create a new definition of materialism. Materialism is now defined as: “a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values” (“Materialism”). Andy Warhol and his artworks were catalysts for the materialistic culture that characterizes contemporary society and continues to influence the world today.
The Pop art movement, was a movement where medium played a huge part in the society, with it reflecting on advertisements, comic strips and even celebrities, like Marilyn. This movement also has a large background and artists that are deeply connected. The pop art movement didn’t just take place in the United States, it actually started in Britain. It started with an independent group, with a mixture of different types of artists, from sculptors to painters. Though by the mid 1960’s, the United States pop art had taken on the movement and it was so popular and bold, that it soon influenced other countries such as Britain.
From Mark Twain to Vincent van Gogh, each genre of art comes with its greatest master. There are many compelling arguments to why this specific artist, musician or writer is the best in their category. In modern days, we don’t have a Mozart, or a Hemingway or even an Andy Warhol. There are many good artists of their own kind and many more are emerging thanks to new technology and new forms of media art. However, many arguments are made as to why these forms of art aren’t considered true forms of art. A few years back and even today, many argue that digital paintings aren’t real art so it is not surprising when people don’t think of a video game as an art form, but it is. The world is at constant change and so is art.
Music has been many different things to people, an escape, a revolution, an experience, a feeling, a message, a memory, a single moment, peace, class, etc. Music has played a large role in the lives of many. The story of music and it’s evolution is beautiful, from ancient melodies being plucked on a harp, to the british invasion and the popular revolution. Music has changed, and it has effected so much. In the recent decades popular music has manipulated humanity into acting inappropriately.

In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.
“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life” (Picasso). These words about the fine arts describe not only life in general, but also apply to everyday life of public school students. Many students need something to divert their attention away from jaded academics that cause them stress and mental deterioration. Fine arts are the solution to that problem; unlike academics and athletics, they provide an outlet for students to be creative and discover their talents without the pressure other courses produce. Additionally, the arts stimulate the brain, and generally promote positive brain activity and development in teenagers. So, if fine arts positively affect students, then why are they so
