Planning for a Baby Experiment
Investigate:-
a) Essential items of equipment needed for the first six months of a
baby's
life.
b) Items essential in a layette.
Finally estimate the total cost.
In order to complete this task I am going to use the following
resources:-
Ÿ Minett textbook,
Ÿ Reynolds textbook,
Ÿ Shops,
Ÿ Magazines,
Ÿ Internet,
Ÿ Michelle (neighbour) to fill out a questionnaire.
My plan of action is:-
Ÿ I will draw up a questionnaire about essential items of equipment
and in the layette.
Ÿ I will visit my neighbour, Michelle, who has the youngest first
child that I know. I will find out what items she considered essential
for the layette and what equipment she needed by asking her to fill
out my questionnaire. I will also ask her to estimate a total cost for
both the layette and the equipment. I will ask her to repeat the
information for her second child so that I can see if parents spend
less on a second child.
Ÿ I will use my Reynolds and Minett textbooks to gather information on
the items that Michelle told me that she needed for her children.
Ÿ I will visit Mothercare and Boots for leaflets and average prices on
items in the layette that my neighbour said that she found essential.
Ÿ I will Katie's Playpen for leaflet and average prices on items of
equipment that my neighbour said that she found essential.
Ÿ I will use an Index catalogue to look up the prices of the items
that I decide are essential.
Ÿ I will then estimate the total cost for a child during the first six
months of it's life.

to me but this is a rough estimate of what the final cost may be.
Instead of focusing on what others were or were not doing, I decided to start focusing on me and goals I wanted to accomplish. One day, I was on the computer surfing the net and happened to get on social media. I happened to come by a post about The Birth Well doula training. A doula is a professional birth support person who assist women emotionally, physically, and with information during pregnancy, birth, and for a short while during postpartum. This sounded like a perfect opportunity to exercise my getting out and broadening my circle and meeting new people all the while fulfilling my birth worker goals from long ago. I decided to look into it, so on the day of the Q & A meeting I attended. I learned about the process, and I signed up for the classes. I was both super excited, and also super nervous at the same time because my family and I were experiencing financial hardships at the time, and I was about to be taking $400 dollars of our funds and investing into a career that was all up to me on whether or not it flourished.
The first days and weeks after conception are critical for fetus body formation. The most extensive transformation of life occurs before birth. The fetal period goes through major changes. During the third month male or female sexual organs begin to develop and is visible through ultrasound. During months 4-6, the baby’s heartbeat becomes stronger. The digestive and excretory systems begin to develop. Body parts such as the fingernails, toenails, and buds of teeth begin to form and hair grows. Brain development occurs in every prenatal month, but the first three months are crucial. The central nervous system becomes responsive during middle of the women 's pregnancy, and begins to regulate body functions such as breathing and sucking.

Portsmouth Infants and Toddlers endured a significant budget cut during SY18. Consequently, funding had to be reallocated to elimination or decrease needed direct services and system operations line items. Specifically, $11,725 dollars was reallocated from Occupational and Physical Therapy to Speech Therapy. The demand for speech has increased dramatically; however, OT and PT are still needed in Portsmouth.
In recent years, great advancement has been made in medicine and technology. Advanced technologies in reproduction have allowed doctors and parents the ability to screen for genetic disorders (Suter, 2007). Through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prospective parents undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) can now have their embryo tested for genetic defects and reduce the chance of the child being born with a genetic disorder (Suter, 2007). This type of technology can open the door and possibility to enhance desirable traits and characteristics in their child. Parents can possibly choose the sex, hair color and eyes or stature. This possibility of selecting desirable traits opens a new world of possible designer babies (Mahoney,

The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.
At Wildcat Hospital, I performed my first newborn assessment on a baby. I walked into the postpartum room and greeted the mother and family and asked if I could (along with another student) perform and assessment on the baby for the second time. This assessment was different from the initial assessment I performed four hours previously, because the second time around I had more control of the assessment. I listened to the heart, lungs, and stomach. I assessed the newborn’s respirations, reflexes and temperature. After our assessment was over, I was able to swaddle the baby back up and hand the infant back into the arms of an excited new mother.
Designer Babies: What are the Ethical and Moral Issues by TK McGhie and Designer Babies: Choosing Our Children’s Genes by Bonnie Steinbock both cover the controversy around an ever growing, ever prominent field of biotechnology. These articles focus on the recent trend of the concept that parents can essentially design the baby of their dreams. Designer babies are not an actual in use trend, but it is a very real hypothetical one. The idea of designer babies first originated in 1978, the day of the first successful in vitro fertilization. From there, more and more technology has become readily available to help improve the lives of unborn children. These two articles are about the same fundamental subject but, they differ from each
The author of this book is 21 year old Gaby Rodriguez. She came up with the idea for this project because she was told repeatedly by her brothers and sisters that she would end up getting pregnant as a teen just like all of them. I believe that the purpose of this project and subsequently the book, was to show that you do not have to live your life on the basis of stereotypes. It does not and should not matter what anyone says about you, you are the master of your life and nothing anyone says about you should change what you believe about yourself, or what you want to do with your life. I love this book, and the Lifetime movie was great too. I have known too many young girls who have gotten pregnant, and it does not mean that their life is over. If they believe in themselves and have the help and support of loved ones, there is no reason why they cannot finish school and get a college degree.
Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. As with infants, no two are alike; each toddler is unique in his or her developmental stages, and each accomplishes milestones at different times. “Although children develop at different rates, there are common stages of development that serve as guidelines for what most children can do by a certain age” (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). As seen in the hatfieldmomof3 (2011) video, one observes toddlers at play and can determine the age of the toddlers by their actions and the milestones they have accomplished.
