Consider how art is interwoven into one’s life. Homes are decorated with it, people study it, artist make it everyday, But how does art contribute to sustainability? One great example of an art work that adds to its community is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens by Isiah Zagar.
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is a non-profit organization, folk art environment, and gallery space on South Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is currently the largest piece of art by mosaic artist Isiah Zagar. The New York Times describes the Magic Gardens as covering the area of three city lots, and includes multiple indoor gallery spaces and a large mosaic maze outdoors (The New York Times). Magic Gardens is a total of 3,000 square feet of mosaicked space. The indoor gallery spaces host artists from all over the world and exhibits works that focuses on ceramic, mosaic, or “outsider” art. Philadelphia Magic Gardens explains on their website that along with the gallery space Magic Gardens also has educational programs, performances, tours, and workshops, all of which are open for the public (Phillymagicgardens.com). By using found, donated, and bought materials from the community, Isiah Zagar has created a space for South Street. Magic Gardens beautifies the space along with the surrounding environment. This improvement in aesthetic quality in a city and also has a positive effect on individuals psychologically. Studies have shown that individuals when exposed to art have “increases in a sense of individual productivity and self-esteem, improvements in individuals’ sense of belonging or attachment to a community, and when contributing to the artwork, improved skills and creative cognitive thinking”
