With 124 million households across the United States roughly 42 million of those have at least one dog. Such a massive amount of people consider these loving companions a family member, and dare to imagine life without them present. This is correct; I currently own two puppies, both that bring me endless love and happiness. With so many canines out there, it is important that there are laws in place to keep humans and all of our paw friends safe and alive. I believe dogs should be leashed throughout the United States. There are over 5 million dog bite victims a year, and there has been a reported rise in this number. Dogs are biting many people each year. According to Dog Bite Statistics, out of the 850,000 victims who must receive medical attention, only an estimated 16,000 receive any type of help from insurance companies. Interesting enough, as one leaves the city life and heads towards the suburbs one finds an increased number of un-leashed dogs, many of which are unsupervised. Once you make it out to the country roads that are on farm area it is extremely common to spot dogs without a collar, and certainly not a leash. Reasons may be the extensive training their dog has been through, or even something as simple as them believing a leash is a form of punishment for the dog. Either or is a solid argument, and while you might own a German Shepard that has significant police training experience, 95% of other dogs in the world have not. If you believe dogs are dogs and should be able free, I highly recommend you seek out a dog park or consider gating in your backyard to accommodate your loved one. Since the majority of dogs don’t receive any training whatsoever and can be spooked without notice, leash laws are the logical choice to keep all parties
