Being awarded the class valedictorian is a prestigious honor that only the hardest working student can earn. To become the valedictorian, one must spend countless hours studying and exhausting themselves - things that seem terrible, but are definitely worth the while in the end. Many school systems are now looking into eliminating this award in order to decrease competition and tensions between students. Instead, they are implementing an award given to the top 10 percent of a class in recognition of their academic achievement. With the abolition of one sole valedictorian and the creation of a group of multiple valedictorians, more students will strive for academic success. More people will try harder in school, even the people who are typically viewed as incapable of achievement due to stereotypes. Sherman Alexie reveals that as an Indian boy, many expected him to be stupid. Because of their indifference, Alexie pushed himself and taught himself how to read with a comic book writing, “A little Indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly… If he’d be anything but an Indian boy living on the reservation, he might have been called a prodigy.” People of all minorities will be inspired to reach their full potential by establishing this new honor. It is always one’s goal to prove another wrong; becoming successful while others are doubtful is a major satisfaction on their part. Author Diane Ravitch comments on how the requirements for the No Child Left Behind program are nearly impossible to meet. With the chance of becoming a valedictorian motivating more students, these difficult requirements will be easier to reach. Systems can measure growing academic achievement in graphs and charts such as the one from U.S Math Performance in Global Perspective created by Eric A. Hanushek, which compares the United State’s percentage of advanced math students with other countries around the world. Education is a huge topic of controversy, society is always trying to reform what we know as education today. Right now, the first 12 years of education are entirely free for students directly, but in the end are paid for by the taxpayers of the town. The question is, why should only grades k-12 be free why not a college education too? On the other hand, there are some exceptions to free schooling at the k-12 levels. The most prominent being, Private schooling, most towns in the United States have at least one if not many private schools. They require a certain amount in tuition for each of its students every year. An example of this, in my town Salem, NH one of the most known private catholic schools is St. Joseph 's. In conclusion, the Academic Achievement has been fueled by society's presets, minority students' lack of effort, and the failures of the schooling system in America. There has been some challenging setbacks, but the Gap can be fixed to create a common ground for all prospective members of America's society to excel on equally. By realizing that change can be achieved, there are little to no limits for minority students to create a better mindset towards education. Students, parents, and teachers have to be willing to work together, as well as tackle obstacles upheld by society, and the economic deficiencies that effect schools across America. This will, in turn, take America one step closer to closing the Academic Achievement Gap in America.
“You are not special. You are not exceptional, contrary to your participation soccer trophy and 5th grade report card” (David McCullough). McCullough articulates that Americans tend to disregard extraordinary achievements, and instead celebrate ordinary progress so that no individual feels inferior. In comparison to our global competitors, society’s contentment with mediocrity is hurting the overall cognitive performance of students in America’s educational systems.

The ability for all children from varying walks of life to receive a well-rounded education in America has become nothing more than a myth. In excerpt “The Essentials of a Good Education”, Diane Ravitch argues the government’s fanatical obsession with data based on test scores has ruined the education system across the country (107). In their eyes, students have faded from their eyes as individual hopefully, creative and full of spirit, and have become statistics on a data sheet, percentages on a pie chart, and numbers calculated to show the intelligence they have from filling out bubbles in a booklet. In order for schools to be able to provide a liberal education, they need the proper funding, which comes from the testing.

In his narrative “I Just Wanna Be Average”, Mike Rose writes, “Students float to the mark you set.” (1989, p.2) This is an injustice to students who are viewed as “slow”. How would education be different if instead of lowering learning standards, educators raised their expectations of what “slow” students are capable of? Michael Oher was from an all-black neighborhood located in the third poorest zip code in the country. By the time he was a sophomore, he’d been to 11 different schools, he couldn’t read or write, and he had a GPA of 0.6. In his first-grade year alone, he missed 41 days of school and ended up repeating both the first and the second grade; he didn’t even go to the third grade. Oher was one of the thousands of children that have been identified as having four or more of the at-risk factors mentioned by the National Center of Education and Statistics (NCES). According to the NCES, poverty and race are high on the list of things that negatively affect students’ ability to succeed at school. Other risk factors include changing schools multiple times and being held back from one or more grades. Oher’s biography, The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, proves how socioeconomic status impacts a child’s academic success because placed in perspective, education is not as important as the hardships of reality.

...est high school students in America” (Gladwell 82). It was shocking to learn that all the Nobel Prize in Medicine winners did not all come from the most prestigious schools. Also, in the third chapter I notices some aspects that were highly relatable to me. My life relates to subjects included in chapter three because I am a student. It is interesting and helpful to learn that one does not need the highest IQ to succeed in today’s world. This is how I relate to chapter three. The third chapter in Outlier by Malcolm Gladwell had striking information that stated that IQs do not always determine who will be successful, and I can relate to the information in the chapter because I am student who has thought about my IQ before.
In society, education can be seen as a foundation for success. Education prepares people for their careers and allows them to contribute to society efficiently. However, there is an achievement gap in education, especially between Hispanics and Blacks. In other words, there is education inequality between these minorities and white students. This achievement gap is a social problem in the education system since this is affecting many schools in the United States. As a response to this social problem, the No Child Left Behind Act was passed to assist in closing this achievement gap by holding schools more accountable for the students’ progress. Unsuccessful, the No Child Left Behind Act was ineffective as a social response since schools were pushed to produce high test scores in order to show a student’s academic progress which in turn, pressured teachers and students even more to do well on these tests.
The No Child Left Behind Act has stacked the deck against schools with special needs. At this point in time with the 2004 elections right around the corner, it seems that this Act is taking a lot of criticism for it’s rigid approach to the educational progress of our children today. No Child Left Behind has some wonderful goals and aspirations: to “close the student achievement gap, make public schools accountable, set standards of excellence for every child, and put a qualified teacher in every classroom”. (http://www.NCLB.gov) In this paper I will be discussing how this new law closes “the student achievement gap” and setting “standards of excellence for every child” using some of the psychological principles that we have covered in this course. When students get a “F” on their exam, that does not necessary means they are stupid, or they do not know the material.
