In this day in age social media is used in many Americans’ daily routines. Weather, news, and work can all be accessed in the palm of a person’s hand. A businessman, a mom on the go, and now even a six-year-old all have access to a device that connects them to the web. A minuscule device has become a major role in the lives of American’s. In today’s society, social media has encouraged oversharing and its use for validation in the world has altered cultural expectations.

It is common for friends to share information that they would not tell parents or strangers. Seeing a therapist about one’s personal problems is also a common occurrence in life. Sharing an upcoming event with close friends and family is normal in all aspects of the word. Personal boundaries and limits begin to get crossed when the conversations make other parties feel uncomfortable. This new phenomenon of sharing private matters so openly has just started to be seen in today’s developing society due to social media. This way of thinking is confusing to the person receiving the information, because in many situations it is seen as respectful to give advice or make comments on a situation that a person is so willing to share. It is now expected to receive the shocking information and think nothing of it and react as if the information was as simple as, “Hello, how are you?” This double standard on communication can lead to many misinterpreted encounters and some participants in the conversation more confused and uncomfortable when they started. Miscommunication is common in the world and is nothing new, but it has become even harder to decipher what a person means when face to face interactions are no longer the practice of this
