The sexism of school dress codes is getting out of control. Everyone complains that faculty in the school are too strict but are they really? Or is it for the females’ protection? We, as girls, feel that we are being personally targeted. Many problems are brought up about bra straps showing, too short of shorts, and even wearing leggings. Although dress codes have been a subject of contention, it has recently prompted a major accretion in protests against attire rules. We as a society shouldn’t focus on something so small. Instead, we should stop targeting females for what they feel comfortable in and let us express our individuality like males get too. Many protests have criticized the dress code as sexist and that it targets females by body-shaming and blames us for promoting sexual harassment. Some school officials have explained many times that it’s for the kids own safety and they are trying to protect females from getting sexually assaulted or even raped. In some cases females have been sent home or even expelled from certain events such as sports, academic activities, and even prom. We should look at the bigger …show more content…

People need to understand that wearing what you want is just as important to your freedom of speech. Women should be able to wear what they want and feel comfortable without having to worry about being sent home to change. In a recent survey 53% of people disagree with banning leggings/yoga pants while 47% want to ban them (Debate 2016). If you go to a public school and there are no uniforms that means you can wear what you want. You might as well have school uniforms if you’re going to disgrace clothing. Some students are even sent home wearing yoga pants with an over-sized t-shirt covering there backside (NEA 2016).
