Have you ever been involved in a school shooting ? Imagine you are huddled in a corner with all your classmates around you screaming and crying. Minutes later you hear gunshots down the hall and the screams get more violent. Soon swat member come get you out. You see blood and injured people lying around. No kid nor a parent wants to go through that. There have been numerous school shootings in the past couple years. With metal detectors school shootings would go down tremendously.
Children should feel safe going to school everyday and parents should also feel safe sending their child to school. There have been 239 school shootings since 2012. There were about 438 people shot or injured. This is not okay! Most stores have tag checkers so we don’t steal things. Schools should have metal detectors so we don’t kill one another! About a year ago there was an incident at my school. I know that I was scared and felt like school wasn’t safe but not only did I so did some of my classmates.We should not be scared to go to school! This should be a wake up call to schools!

Many people think that putting metal detectors in are too much and they aren't worth it. But what is bigger the price of a metal detector or the price of someones life? It is our job as a notion to keep our children safe! To put a metal detector at every entrance of the school would cost as much at 30,000 dollars but that also means that every part of the school is more safe. Also if we have police officers on campus might help too. But how much would that cost? According to De Blasio ( mayor of NYC) to have 1,400 schools with officers on campus would cost about 1.2 billion dollars. What if we only have officers on campus for a short time? Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
While school shootings threaten children and faculty amongst schools in America, metal detectors do not set a welcoming tone for any school. Generally, people consider metal detectors a source of safety and will rely on them to decrease the likelihood of danger, but unfortunately that does not always occur. In reality, metal detectors would cause more trouble for schools, they would make people question their safety, and they would not be as effective nor as necessary as they used to be.

Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. Just over 50 million children attend public elementary school, justifying the production of 50 million guns. If the average handgun is $400, that will be an estimated cost of 40 billion dollars. However, if kept in good condition, the guns can be reused for many years and pass from child to child as they get older. From 1980’s till now, there are has been many school shootings. Many researchers have made many hypotheses as to why these occur. The most tragic shooting took place in Sandy Hook Elementary. 2. I believe that we should prevent shootings from happening in schools because schools are meant to be a safe education environment for students and faculty. This way the parents will be assured that their children are in a safe place and teachers also don’t have to worry about carrying a weapon with them all the time. In light of recent acts of violence in the nation’s schools, school safety and security have become a hot topic. However, the issue of school safety goes beyond student violence. It includes property damage, theft, and anything else that concerns the overall well being of schools. While it is important to create a safe environment in schools it is also necessary to make sure students feel comfortable in this atmosphere. The security can not be so overbearing that it becomes a negative tactic that gets in the way of the students main objective, learning. Barely noticeable cameras, ID cards, and security guards without uniforms can help generate this safe, but comfortable learning environment. On the other hand metal detectors and mini police forces may be a little too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, or even modern prisons. School security should not be overbearing or obtrusive where it gets in the way of a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning in the nation’s schools.
Although most security measures passively make schools safer, it is not nearly enough to prevent an individual who intends on creating mass violence from completing his or her task. State representatives, national organizations, school staff, and parents need to come together to figure out the most reliable ways to prevent an active shooter situation from occurring in their schools. One solution that has been active is many schools have partnered with local law enforcement agencies to provide a police officers to patrol school grounds....
Those are some questions people need answers to, especially those concerned with what will happen next. Is there enough being done to end gun violence in schools? Yes, there are metal detectors in some schools but is that enough? Shouldn’t they make metal detectors mandatory in every school, more security guards should be hired and identification should be shown to everyone who enters the building. There should be precautions taken, but of course there isn’t enough funding to buy metal detectors and hire more security guards or even to buy the machines to make identification cards.
Now more than ever the increase of in school massacres are starting to become more evident. The Sandy Hook and Oregon shootings are sending people searching for a way to keep their children safe when they are away from home receiving an education. This poses an issue, some people see it is fit for teachers to be armed with a gun in case of future attacks on the school. The outcome that will follow from arming teachers will be negative, but there is a solution that involves the protection of students without handing guns over to teachers.
First, schools have grown more violent lately with school shootings at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Newtown Elementary, and Townville. Schools should be able to search students lockers to check for weapons or other evidence that they might be planning to carry out a similar attack. This would hopefully help reduce the number of school shootings that occur. For example “100,000 students bring guns to schools” (Taylor). Locker searches at more schools might help to reduce that number.
These would be preventative and the first line of defence. The metal detectors could stop weapons from ever getting into schools and would make it harder to smuggle one in because the perpetrator couldn't hide the weapon. The weapon would be found before the shooting could take place and the school officials would be notified. The gunman would then be unarmed and taken into custody by an SRO or police officer. Students, teachers, and visitors should be required to walk through before entering the school.
The schools had also brought in school officers to have on school grounding during school hours. They feel that they need these type of secured to have their children protected. Parents feel a little say knowing that there is a police in school patrolling. In several school they have started to do searches to make sure no one is bring anything dangerous that could harm a person. This is super important to makes sure no weapons are on school grounds. There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
