Race, class, and gender; these three terms are used exhaustively in modern political discourse. Scholars and pundits throughout the political spectrum ponder as to how they intersect and affect each other, coming to wildly diverse conclusions. Typically, the conclusions these individuals come to are divisive since these topics are controversial, and only convince those who are seeking confirmation of the viewpoints they had originally -- essentially preaching to the choir. Many shortsightedly focus on one or two of these terms exclusively, ignoring the bigger picture either in ignorance or deliberate manipulation,. Unfortunately, we have many issues regarding race that linger on to this day, as shown by the popularity of bigoted demagogues in the republican primaries or the numerous protests of the Black Lives Matter movement or instances of looting and rioting by provocateurs in response to police brutality Conversely, there is Japan, a country that is similar in economic prosperity to the United States but vastly different in racial makeup. Japan is largely homogenous, with a miniscule immigrant/migrant worker population, this insular culture has left the Japanese largely unconscious of race, and when confronted with it, most respond either with patronizing curiosity or outright racism.
