It’s dangerous, addictive, and destroys millions of teen lives, that is what we are led to believe about marijuana. We have been conditioned to think it is bad and the people that use it are bad. Over 98 million people over the age of 12 have smoked. It is very common, and plays a substantial role in modern day pop culture. The problem is that so many of us are unfamiliar with all the benefits marijuana provides. Instead of assuming it’s dangerous, as a country we should keep an open-mind to the positives it may bring to the United States. That is why the legalization of marijuana should be available for those at least 21 years of age because of the economic, health and social benefits. On January 1, 2014 the states of Colorado and Washington allowed the first retail of recreational marijuana in the United States. This was a very controversial decision. However Travis Eubanks from EUbanks article stated that he had visited since it was passed and said, “There wasn’t rioting in the streets, and the world didn’t end. In fact, People I talked to who live in the state say nothing has changed at all.” Many lawmakers and non-supporters were worried there would be problems including: public consumption, drugged driving, minors’ access, and trafficking to outside states. There has been laws put in place and so far none of these have been concerns. With the state taxes at 35 percent, it resulted in about $70 million in revenue this year alone. There has been plans to use this for debt, but the biggest is to put it into education and schools. With such high demand, it has resulted in a growing industry of marijuana farmers. Legalizing it would not make is more accessible, because it is already everywhere. Legalizing it would give the people more freedom to make that choice that so many have already made; to just say no. That’s is what this country is about, freedom. We should be given the opportunity to make our own choices. If this were to pass, like already in Colorado and Washington, there would be policies put in place to prevent abuse of this drug. The only things that can come from this is beneficial. The amount of revenue would be outragous, just think of how that money could be used. Not only that but it can save so many lives as well. After legalized we can put funding into research and discovery even more health benefits. That is why marijuana should be legalized, because of all the possible economic, social and health benefits it may bring.
