People use the internet to browse and do all kinds of work. As it increases, peoples information is exposed more than ever before. Having information exposed on the internet also means there are more ways criminals could get your personal information and use it for evil purposes. In the year of 2016, about 1 in 16 U.S. adults were victims of identity theft .Nothing in this world is completely secure, including your personal information. Identity theft is a growing crime, there are more ways criminals could obtain personal information, avoid paying credit card bills, it's a crime that is easy to get away with. Today there is a thousand of ways people could find and share information. With so much information, out there it is hard to keep track of it. Even though it is a serious crime local and governmental authorities don’t punish the thief at times because it sometimes remains unreported. As Mark Rasch, a cybersecurity researcher said, “Police don't want to be bothered. It's a difficult crime to investigate, and the feeling is, "Oh, we're never going to catch these guys." Most local law enforcement lacks the personnel and expertise to investigate smaller identity crimes, and the FBI is only interested in massive cases involving hundreds of victims or more” (Rasch, Mark). According to Phoenix police, “It is often impossible to find the criminals. It is one of the hardest crimes to solve”(usatoday.com). The cost of investigating is costly, that authorities think it’s not worth investigating. All types of identity theft is punishable by the U.S. law and the punishment can go up to 30 years in prison, fines, and criminal forfeiture. Also, corporations should take people’s information with more care. Data breaches online should never happen if the information was secured
