Introduction The National Health Care for the Homeless Council defines a homeless person as an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; stay in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other unstable or non-permanent situation.
Homelessness is a growing issue in Licking County and all over the world. On any given night, there are over 600,000 homeless people in the US according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (Quigley, 2014, para 2). These individuals do not have a place to sleep or call home. They are merely surviving. When a person becomes homeless it is not by choice. They are forced my many factors in their lives such as an abusive relationship. People in situations such as this
It is only recently that people are starting to see it. Deb Dingus is among the many people in Licking County who are trying to decrease the number of homelessness. Deb is the director of the United Way of Licking County. SHe has lived in Licking County for a long times. Seeing that this is her home she took the step to make a change in her community. Deb’s idea came to life as she celebrated her 50th birthday and 5 years of being cancer free. As a way to give back to her community she has gone a 50-day walk. Her mission is to raise awareness and money to help homeless people in Licking County. Her plan is to stop at every township to talk to community members about the problems they are facing in their community. Through this hike she is shining a light on the growing issues in Licking county such as homelessness, domestic violence and addiction. In an interview Deb said “As I share that story, it’s a call to action then, for the entire county to get involved, there’s something that everybody can do (Smola, 2016, Para 5).
