The issue of distracted driving with parents, is that their children tend to follow how they do things. Some parents do not even realize that having a cell phone in the car may add an additional distraction, which could be potentially hazardous for new drivers. They also feel that by letting their kids have cell phones they have a safety cushion in knowing where they are at all times. Parents need to set an example of not being distracted while driving to teach their young adult drivers. Teenagers have expressed times where they have seen their parents or relatives texting while driving and feel they will be able to do the same thing safely. They feel that rules do not apply to them. But that is not always the case with teens and cell phone use. In 2009, The Pew Internet and American Life Project published a report that focused specifically on teens and distracted driving. They found out that seventy-five percent of teens aged twelve to seventeen have cell phones (3). Then, forty-eight percent of teens spoke up and said that they have been a passenger in a car when the driver was texting (3). Of these, forty percent felt like their safety or the safety of others was compromised due to the driver texting (3). Within the findings of the report, The Pew Internet and American Life Project found that while some teens expressed their concern about texting and driving, the teens have developed other strategies they believe help them text more safely. Some of the strategies include; giving their phone to a friend in the car or only using the device at red lights (3).
