If the child is yours and you believe in an alternative method of discipline, who is to tell you it is not right. The definition of discipline is: the practice of training people to obey rules or code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. If discipline is described as using punishment to correct disobedience then how can you say abuse is wrong? The parent may just be using their own form of punishment to keep the child from disobeying them. This is not something that should be a norm in our culture, but it is.
