Personal Statement: Interests, Experiences, and Goals in Nuclear Engineering Money and fame do not motivate my goals. Engineering in all forms is a field of innovation and invention. Aspirations of any great engineer should be to introduce to the world a new idea, product, or service that will make people happier and the environment safer. Success in these challenges is a reward greater than any dollar amount or public recognition. Engineers bring societies to new levels of civilization through their advancements in technology and discovery. The challenge to provide people with ever-increasing standards while at the same time feeding the population with ideas of what could be attracts my imagination, intelligence, and curiosity far more than any other career option. The engineering field embraces these challenges. I am seeking admission into the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, College of Engineering. I intend to major in nuclear engineering. Of all the engineering programs, nuclear engineering interests me the most. Far from perfect, nuclear power has a possibility of being part of our future energy source. With the rising prices of and the limitations of natural resources, nuclear energy is needed in our society. It will most likely be accompanied with wind, solar, and other small sustainable and renewable sources. The technology is interesting, and quite dangerous but with time, as with any technological advances, nuclear power should become a safer and more reliable energy source for the future.

From the generic images that guide us through our daily lives to the shapes we see on television screens, these symbols are everywhere—and their importance as guides that tell us how to live, what to do and whom to believe is undeniable. Of all of these symbols, perhaps some of the most important are the symbols found in literature. In using simplistic symbols to represent profound ideas, authors construct a kind of “key”: one that allows readers to look past the surface of a story and reflect on the deeper messages beneath. Such is the nature of the symbols found in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. As a group of boys stranded on an island struggle to survive without adult supervision to maintain order, Golding uses a variety of objects to convey their descent from civilization into brutality, violence, and savagery. Of these objects, three hold particular significance. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the conch, the signal fire, and the Lord of the Flies to symbolize civilization, hope for rescue, and inner evil while conveying an overall theme of innate human evil.

Effects of poverty cause the feelings of economic needs, frustration and even anger that cause people to commit petty street crimes. Although having a criminal record may impact employment and income, prisons are meant to rehabilitate and often provide inmates with skills training in order to better prepare them for finding work once they are out of prison. Also, programs exist that help those formerly convicted find a job and thus, better income. On the other hand, those in poverty find it difficult to get out of poverty. For instance, they often cannot afford additional schooling or to take time off work in order to attend programs that provide skills training or help find another job, which makes resorting to crime more likely. Whilst there are clear arguments for and against nuclear energy, the future is promising; with scientists working on potential breakthroughs such as nuclear fusion, and the design of newer and better and reactors. Nuclear fusion is a reaction which causes the nuclei of atoms to collide and form a new atomic nucleus.
