One of the proudest achievements of my life was earning my Bachelor of Science in nursing undergraduate degree from Jefferson University in Philadelphia, in spite of the fact that my early adulthood pointed in the opposite direction. My decision to become a nurse was not a lifetime dream from childhood, or following in the footsteps of a parent. In fact, my career choice was made while at the United Nations Refugee camp in Ghana, fleeing from the rebel war in Liberia, West Africa. It was during this time at the refugee camp that my father was hospitalized, originally for his uncontrolled diabetes. Within two days, he had developed a major clot that dislodged and caused a massive ischemic cerebrovascular accident, which rendered him in a comatose state. …show more content…

Whenever the physicians came in and spoke to us about my dad, they only spoke in medical terms, this left the family and me afraid and uncertain of what to expect. However, the healthcare providers who supported us the most were our nurses. Not only did they provide outstanding care to my dad, they also explained everything to my family and I in terms we could understand. The nurses considered our personal needs, empathized with our situation and updated us daily with information’s on the health of my dad. Most importantly, they treated my dad like a person, talking to him while providing care, and maintaining his privacy. The difference between the two professions and how they interacted with my dad was enough to direct me into the profession of
