Personal Reflection: The Beauty Of Social Work

The beauty of social work is diversity. There are many groups of clients with their own specifics needs and hardships, each with a different approach needed and many ways to succeed. The thing that first drew me to social work is the ability to learn how to interact and help so many different individuals with many backgrounds, reputations, and future plans. The groups that I am most drawn to are the innocent, the neglected, and the abused. I have plans to work with youth affected by mental illness, abuse, or delinquency. I find that working with families is the most fulfilling in finding the root of the problem, addressing all areas that are contributing to this child or young adult, and creating a solid family unit to project young lives in …show more content…

As an intern, I had the flexibility to observe and help caseworkers in Child Protective Services and Foster Care. I shadowed investigations, removals, court dates, foster home evaluations, supervised visits, doctor appointments, and helped find placement. Some days a child who disrupted foster placement had to be brought in to the office to stay until new placement was found. They were the vulnerable, angry, and hurt as we searched for somewhere that would accept them how they were. As we found things to hold their attention, we would have chances to bond, and at those moments I conveyed the skill set I have acquired throughout my life and education that makes me most fit for social work. I was able to practice compassion, clear communication, active listening, and most importantly empathy. I like to delve in to the parts of Atlanta that many are warned about, that the affluent avoided, and that seem to be hopeless at times. I have started charity event with friends called Blessed with Blankets. We collected donations and were able to go to many homeless communities to hand out 730 emergency blankets. Finding warmth could be just the encouragement an individual needs to carry out their goals and come back to benefit their community. Every Tuesday, I am part of a group connected to the organization NightLight. This group works with women in the sex industry. We use every week to build personal relationships with women who work in the local strip clubs as well as their children. It was beneficial for me to become part of this group to learn how to really relate and interact with these women in a way that wasn’t just one-sided, but a real relationship.
