Personal Narrative: The Giving Tree

People are constantly wanting to educate their children, and they always want their children to have a better life than what they had to endure. Most of the time parents want to be able to read to their children every opportunity they get. It makes sense that in order for the child to grow academically, they must first be introduced to material that will ultimately be their foundation of understanding. Reading was a huge role in my life as child and it has shaped me into the person I am today. There was one story in particular that completely changed how I viewed the world around me. There would be countless of nights that I could listen to the story over and over again. There were many times when my mother would have to force me to close my eyes, so she would not have to read the book again. As a child, I believe that the story served as more of a picture book. I enjoyed seeing the child progressively grow into an old man and I also enjoyed how the tree began to take different forms, such as a strong tree being cut down to a stump. I was also obsessed with the color green, so the book was even more appealing since most of the pages were covered with a leafy, green color. The book made me imagine what it would be like to have a real tree give me advice. For example, in the book the boy wants to make a house, so the tree tells the boy to cut its branches and make a house. The book had become such a huge part of my life that it seemed as though that was all I could talk about. For instance, I remember one year for Christmas I got a stuffed tree with the apple attached to it. Now that I look back at this time in my life, I can see how much this one particular book influenced my perspective on life.
