Throughout the history of the United States, whites dominated society by making laws that limited the power of minorities such as Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans. For hundreds of years, whites controlled minorities using laws and mind games to make sure these minorities never rose to threaten their control. In the 1950s and 60s, Congress passed laws to protect the civil rights of minorities such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination based on “race, color, or religion” in the work force. Even though many people would say that racism ended decades ago, in “Piercing the Brilliant Veil: Two Stories of American Racism” from the Indiana Law Journal, Deborah Jones Merritt argues that two stories of racism exist in our society.
In One Friday Morning Nancy Lee, a beautiful, proud African American student, is given the Artist Club Scholarship but unfortunately it is taken away from her “when the committee learned that [she was] colored.” It is not right nor fair what Nancy Lee faces, but it is and has been an ongoing issue here in the world today. ...h. I share my experience of racism with my grandfather while I was at a track meet in Pecos, Texas. I cleared my throat and begin to talk. My team just complete an interstate track meet and from the bleachers you can hear somebody yell, “MUD! MUD!” The team thought somebody last name was Mud, but we were wrong. The chanting changed to “go home jungle bunnies” and “tar babies.” Some of my teammates never been insulted in this matter. We all looked up, flipped him off, and walked to the van. That was my first brush with racism. My grandfather folded his arms and said, “Crazy, I guess things will never change in certain areas, right?” I agreed and chuckled. My grandfather would finish his time in the Army with an honorary discharge. With money in his pockets and time on his hands, he decided to return home, not knowing what history has from him and the world.
Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Many will argue that in this day in age we are no longer at a race war but how can you be so sure when you actually open your eyes and see reality. In Nathan McCall’s “Makes Me Wanna Holler,” he describes the difficulties he must face as a young black boy experiencing the slow, never-ending process of the integration of blacks and whites. Through this process, his autobiography serves as an excellent example of my theory on the formation and definition of racial identity; a theory which is based upon a combination of the claims which Stuart Hall and George Lipsitz present in their essays regarding racial identity. Therefore the definition I have concocted is one in which racial identity consists of an unstable historical process through which one comes to know themselves in relation to an outside group. In this paper I will present Hall and Lipsitz’s arguments, describing how they confirm and support one another, leading to my theory concerning racial identity. I will then show how this theory is clearly exemplified in the story of McCall’s childhood.
Throughout time, some views on particular issues in society change dramatically while others remain unchanged. Sometimes, only one aspect of the issue is perceived differently while the rest of the topic stays the same. This is demonstrated well in the case of racism. In the United States, racism itself has not changed, but the allotment for what is considered acceptable has. Racism deals with the actual outward discrimination upon a race or the mental process of thinking a race inferior to your own. This phenomenon exists in the U.S. today just as it existed in the first years of the nation's existence; however, the way it is perceived has changed drastically. Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe expressed similar though not identical views of the African-American race and a belief that blacks are rational human beings. A hundred years later, Malcolm X held a dramatically different view of racism and the extent to which it affects society as a whole.
As children, our parents instill in us beliefs that we carry with us throughout our lives. Many beliefs we are taught have been passed on through generations. One such belief is racism. During one day I was on the way home wanna get a cab and saw and long line but the first two people that was in the front was an Thai and a Indian person, the cab arrive and the Thai women saw the cab was just sat by an Indian and quickly call for another cab, the one at the back of that Thai women an Indian guy sat into the cab instead. This could easily tell you that the Thai people were trying to move away from the Indian people.
