Personal Narrative: My Microsystem

My microsystem at age 10 was the 4 members of my nuclear family. This included, my father, my mother, my older brother and my younger brother. Family friends and extended family I would not consider to be part of my influence just yet at this age. However, there were people in our neighborhood that I would consider to be part of my microsystem. These people I considered family friends as we all would hang out and have dinners together. My exosystem consisted of me going to the same workplace as my parents. As we own stores, I would often be put to work while they were working for the day, typically spending around eight hours at work. It was a neighborhood that contained all sorts of religion, myself being Sikh, a few were Christian, and a few were Lutheran. I do not remember the government having any impact on our family whatsoever, as we seemed to be well off during this time. The chronosystem at this time was changing. This was in 2009 when Bush was President, but it was also the same year that Barack Obama made history and became our President. I thought that if he could be the first African-American President after all these years as a country, that I could do anything if I set my mind to it, I saw him as a role model. At this time in the world, the United States was at war in Iraq, so I remember hearing all the horror stories and the kidnapping that would appear on the news. The two layers that had the biggest impact on my development would have to be the chronosystem and the mesosystem. The reason behind the mesosystem would be that without this I wouldn't have learned the difference between a “school relationship” and a “caring relationship.” Most of my life i've had teachers that do not build bonds with their students and I feel it was important to learn this early on and teach myself how to act around them and my caretakers. The chronosystem had a large impact as well because the stories and the videos of war that I saw were my first exposure to that level of violence.
