I think that one of the most important decisions I have made lately was to start college. I started to reach this decision when I realized that I was extremely limited in advancement at my current company. A few of the decision I needed to make were what school I wished to attend, if I wanted to be an online student or not, and what I wanted to major in. The first point I needed to decide was what I wanted to major in as that would be what I used to determine where I would attend. Part of the reason I had not started college prior to now was my inability to decide what I wanted to do. Graduating from high school is a huge achievement. Senior year is when all the important decisions had to be made, including whether to attend college or not. The next major choice I had to make as a high school student was selecting a college to attend. There are a variety of factors that finfluenced the final decision. Some of these factors included financial aid, reputation , college experience and college size. Choosing acceptance to Case Western Reserve University was a better choice compared to The Ohio State University.
My transition to college was successful, but it was nonetheless one of the most stressful times in my life. Unlike many of my peers at Saint Louis University, my rural high school experience did not truly prepare me for the academic rigors of college. My journey to higher education spans 24-years and combines two passions, teaching and EMS (emergency medical services). This journey began in 1986 with a suburban kindergarten class of 25 in Memphis, TN. Eleven years later no longer am I teaching school-age children; instead, I am delivering training programs to EMS providers as well as the medical community. College has a extensive impact on a person that some people simply don’t realize. When I first started college, I was a little close-minded and unsure about what it was I wanted to do with the rest of my life. When I was halfway through my freshman year, I decided to completely change my path in life. I left ECU, moved into an apartment, transferred to Pitt and declared my major intended sonography. Then suddenly I hated what I was doing, I had to take a step back and truly evaluate my life and what it was I was meant to do. I was completely lost. Then one day I received a text from a friend telling me to apply to a hospital located in Chesapeake, Virginia. I did, and I got the job. When I told my parents they were less than thrilled, they didn’t like the idea of me taking a year off from school to work, but I thought long and hard about what was best for me and decided it was something I was meant to do, it was the path I needed to follow. I worked for a year while living at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. I was completely independent, providing for myself 100 percent. While working this job, I realized that what I wanted to do and what I was called to do in life was become a nurse, which is something I would have never figured out had I not seriously weighed my options
As an adult you will be opposed with many difficult decisions throughout your life time, and deciding my major had to be one of the toughest decisions I’ve made in my short adult hood. Choosing my major was a tough decision for me because I knew my next four years of college would be the most vital years of my life for years to come. Weighing out all possible outcomes, likes, beliefs and dreams I finally came to the decision of my major.
The stereotypical version of the normal life of a teenager proceeding to college would include high academic standards met throughout their high school career and outstanding outside testing scores resulting in automatic entry into the institution of their choice. Many of these individuals have the support of their accomplished family members in the form of financial support. There are those who have not had the luxuries of any easy upbringing but forced to decide between a life with a college degree or full-time employment. For myself I want to have it all and to achieve that I have taken on both.
Until this past spring I hadn't thought much about what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go for college. One day in the spring the junior class had a meeting in the auditorium about taking our ACT test and college plans. After that meeting I realized I needed a change, getting into college wasn't going to be a breeze, kind of how I had treated high school. Although I always considered myself to be fairly smart, I never had put much effort into school, but after seeing the facts and requirements to get into schools, and especially after hearing Ms. Rice saying "In today's world, the way to a successful future, is choosing college as your future", I knew I had to make an adjustment for the better so that college could be my future.
During one of my rides for work at O'SNAP, I passed by a group of students gathered around in a circle on the sidewalk. After dropping off my party, I drove by them to ask if they needed a ride. They accepted, but one of the students was visibly ill. I asked if they needed assistance to get back to their dorm, but they insisted they were fine. Due to the policy of NDSP, student drivers aren't allowed to bring back students who are ill due to insurance policies. The student insisted they were fine, but was unable to maintain balance and felt light headed. There was an unopened water bottle in the vehicle I was operating and offered it to the student. The other students with the student helped me lower the student to sit on the edge of the curb.
Many students are struggling in college. According to the New York Times Web site, only 33 percent of the college students are graduating in six years. Obviously students still need much help to succeed in order to get where they want to go. Although college can be challenging, I am going to succeed by using advice from experts, by developing strategies and ideas, and by taking advantage of the benefits offered by my college.
There was the option to go for an OTA (Occupational Therapy Assistant) at a Community College. I set my mind and decided I would work towards an OTA. Though I thought I was finally set and finally found my career path, life reminded me I was now out of High School and responsible for contributing to some of my family's financial obligations. Going to College was my choice, it was never something my parents ever talked to me about or mentioned. I come from a family who has migrated from South America and their only goal was to work long hours in a manufacturing job to make a living.
My first year in college has been a rewarding experience. As I look back on my Why College, Why Now essay, I realize that I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about myself. I am proud that I accomplished my goals I made in my first year of college and I exceeded my expectations. I still have the same goal for the future, but I added more goals for the future. I am attending Wilmington University because I want to make my future brighter. Attending college and earning a degree in communication media will help me obtain an exciting job as a professional journalist.
I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
