For as long as I can remember learning how to read and write was a real challenge for me. When I first arrived in the United States I was enrolled at the nearby elementary school. Being from another country I was scared and embarrassed because I was different then the other children in my class. Talking and communicating with others was something that wasn't in the interest of what I wanted to do. I sat far away from others depriving myself of what they were doing or learning. Coming from Mexico and going to a school where no other children would speak the same language that I would or even play the way I did made me believe that I was some sort of thing that didn't belong. All these contributed to a low esteemed child that was unable to communicate. The world I was in suddenly became a place that I didn't know. To the kids and others in my class I was an illiterate person.
I felt so nervous because everyone around me was talking but I couldn’t understand a word that came out of their mouths. When my mom dropped me off at school that morning, I almost started crying. I had a certain feeling of loneliness, as if there was no one to relate to. As a person who didn’t speak English, I was placed in E.S.O.L program at school, where I could be taught at a pace fitting for me. Making friends became a great challenge because I wasn’t able to communicate with my peers; the reason why I always felt excited about going home to my family, the only people with whom I could communicate effectively in French. As time went on, communication with my peers became less of a hassle because I could speak more of the English language. Being able to learn English in the course of four months and speak it fluently, I then begin to make real connections with my peers. I was very dull in the English language, and it was very difficult to learn. Simple things, such as “May I go to the restroom” was a challenge to say. In the third grade, I moved from Toronto to Siloam Springs. Here I would progress to learn more and more. I would finally understand that there were parts of speech as well as grammar to go with it than just words. Going on into elementary school, I was getting better and better. English is my second languish and I thought that as long as I knew the basic I would be ok in life. But as I got older I started seeing the pattern of negatives effects of my insecurity of grammar. My return to college open my eyes to a better potential in life just by continually a proper college education. When reading this article the wheels of my brain started spinning. When my sisters asked why the pack lived at a different place mom just said that the den was only for pups being born. It is also used as a way to raise the pups, until they are strong enough to live with the pack. Mom then led us to where the pack was staying and we met all of the other wolves (Wolf). There was one wolf that looked like he was hanging back from the others. Mom said that he was the lowest in the pack because he was different from us and he was also weaker. When I asked how he was different mom told us that he came from the humans and that one of his parents was in a human’s pack. Mom told us not to worry about him hurting us because he knows better.
When I first started school, I really didn’t know any English. It was hard because none of the kids knew what I was saying, and sometimes the teachers didn’t understand what I was saying. I was put in those ELL classes where they teach you English. The room they would take us to was full of pictures to teach us English, and they would make us sit on a red carpet and teach us how to read and write. When I would go back to regular class, I would have to try harder than the other students. I would have to study a little more and work a little harder with reading and writing if I wanted to be in the same level as the other kids in my class. when I got to third grade I took a test for my English and past it I didn’t have to go to does ELL classes anymore because I passed the test, and it felt great knowing that I wouldn’t have to take those classes no more.
People tend to take their legs for granted. While the other girls in my school were fawning over the football players’ muscles, or their perfect hair, I was jealous of their legs. In a gym full of colorful mats and loud children, all I could focus on was the heavy Polish accent of my physical therapist urging me to trust myself. I took three whole steps. I started to get over confident, thinking that I could walk way more than someone who had a three-year gap in their walking practice should. I took four more steps. The moment I stepped on the ferry was like no other. The feeling of the moisture from Lake Superior on my skin was breathtaking. I have passed Mackinac city a million times but never experienced the heart-stopping beauty of Lake Superior and Mackinac Island. When I arrived to the island there were thousands of people all around me. I have never been accustomed to how many people were around, and on such a small island. Living in Michigan for almost half my life and moving away from this experience was something I thought would never happen. I really took living there for granted. I had never realized all of the things I never did until after moving and coming back to Michigan to discover more. I moved to Wyoming the beginning of summer 2010.
A few months before I first moved to the United States from Jordan at the age of 13, my family rescued and took in a stray two-week-old, grey-striped kitten. I agreed to be the main caretaker of it, wishfully thinking that it would be all fun and games. We named it Maya, which is the Arabic word for water since we found it by our pool, and placed its little bed and towel in my room at the far end of the apartment. I soon realized that raising a living creature was a difficult task, and this happened on one of our first nights together.
Then in eighth grade I came to the United States so this occupation change and got more difficult. Now I had to learn a new language and get used to a different education system and a new culture. I remember this being very difficult and frustrating because I wanted to do well in my classes but I didn 't understand my professors or the material, Luckily I was placed in a bilingual system with great people that were willing to help kids like me learn the language and be successful. Also at this stage of my life I was aware of the fact that if I wanted to be successful and have a good career I had to do well and finish school.
