Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Community

A community is a place that you live in and feel safe. You feel like you can trust anyone and the police are well trained so they will come as fast as they can when you need them. A place where you feel that everyone shares common attitudes and goals. I’m not quite sure I grew up in the place I just described. Growing up my brother and I were never allowed to ride our bikes outside our apartment because cars on the street we live in would speed by as if the street was the freeway. I would also always hear about robberies, until one day I actually witnessed one. My father was saving up for a new car radio, after saving money for about six months he finally bought it. It has pushed me to strive for success and nothing else so that someday when I have kids of my own, they grow up in a safe environment. A place where I’m not terrified of them going to the place where they get their education. And where they are free to play outside. Growing up in my community I have also witnessed many people facing addictions. Families trying to remain united while facing economic problems. All this has motivated me to become a psychologist. That way in the future I can help people living in any community. I have always loved observing and helping people. Therefore I want to help people with their problems through my career. I also want to become economically stable; to not end up like some people in my community that feel the need to steal. I’ve had the chance to witness what happens to people who chose the wrong path. I’ve also seen this with my own family, having the opportunity to compare the lives of my successful family members and those who aren’t as successful. I have family members who struggle economically in their daily lives. Family members who have ended up in jail because of some wrong decisions they made. Although I also have those family members who have a career they’re passionate about and enjoy doing it daily, also those who own a house and have a beautiful family. All this has determined me to become successful because some day I want to be a psychologist who enjoys helping people every day. I want to have a family of my own and be able to support them with everything I can. I always see how my dad stresses out with his job and how my mom has to stretch money around.
