As an aspiring Social Worker, I have primarily always had the idea that the career mostly entails one who helps those in his/her community. While reading this first chapter, I realized the logistics and history behind the basis of social work, such as how it has significantly developed from colonial America. The early 20th century viewed poverty as a personal decision made by one’s own failure. It was assumed that those who weren’t of the “deserving” poor, were not to be given resources. Therefore, there was a lack of initiative in aspect to social welfare.
