My father studied Mechanical Engineering and my mother studied Chemical Engineering. People would usually assume that it's just natural for me to take up an engineering course and follow in their footsteps. However, that's not really true in my case. It is true that thanks to my parents, I have a natural inclination towards maths and science. But, the reason why I wish to pursue this course is not because of my parents, I simply have a passion towards creating and inventing. I used to like playing with cardboard boxes, cutting and pasting them to create anything that I found interesting at the time. For example, I once made a so-called “bionic arm” using cardboard, tapes and string when I was in primary school. I didn’t create the bionic arm for any competition or anything. I just wanted to make a toy that I could play with. But, since those days, I’ve always wanted to invent a real device, a real gadget, something practical. The experience that I gained has taught me many lessons. For example, we scouts go camping quite often and one important part of any camp is to create “gadgets” for us to use as furniture. Being out in the woods with very limited resources taught me to make use of what little there was and how to use limited resources efficiently and properly. “From failure, we rise again. From success, we go beyond”. That is my motto. I am very persistent when it comes to reaching for my goals. Failure does not dishearten me and success does not make me feel accomplished. I know that failure is just a stepping stone and even in success, there are many more boundaries for me to break. I enjoy going through that same cycle over and over again. ... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
And if it is true that the lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success then I am right. This is where my path to success really begins. It is never late to start again. Small things that aren’t so small can have a big repercussion in someone's life. We as human beings need to learn how to be more loving, respectful and compassionate. I am so proud to be who I am today because of this past experiences. I believe almost everybody has had a time in their lives in which they failed, nobody is perfect. I didn’t have a lot growing up but I my parents made sure we always have what we needed. My mother and father always wanted me to get an engineer or a business degree. They wanted to be able to make more money and become more successful than they ever were. When I showed an interest in history and psychology in high school I knew they would be disappointed in me. I never cared about making money, I knew I wanted to be able to make a living doing something that I was passionate about. One day I hope to get my degree in social work and do just that. One of my favorite sayings is that if you enjoy what you do you will never work a day in your life written by Confucius.
Success and failure seem to be pretty distinct opposites, but many times the differences between success and failure aren’t as obvious as we may think them to be. Sometimes a failure can be turned into a success if you are willing to look back at them, and are open to learning from them. Many times, one’s attitude toward a failure can determine whether or not anything is learned from it. Those who remain upbeat and positive after a failure may be able to get something out of it, but those who just don’t think about it and ignore it won’t get anything from it.
Failure can cause a torrent of mixed emotions and thoughts. One can begin to doubt their motives for even attempting to succeed at a certain task. Some people may choose to give up after failure, but there are a select few who rise up to the occasion and move forward to try and succeed no matter how many tries it takes. By overcoming those difficult moments in life, it gives a person a sense of accomplishment and pride and that alone is a beautiful thing.

Everyone wants to be something from a doctor to a stylist, I want to be a mechanical engineer. This is something I have always wanted to do in my life, the opportunities that exist in this field can lead to anything. This was the lesson I learnt from my father, an unceasing learner and a person who would never give up no matter how many and how difficult the obstacles may be. Having understood from him that success is a moving target, the years of my life with my family have inculcated in me a desire to achieve perfection.

I am applying for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Solid Mechanics to expand on my study of and experience with materials. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Materials Science and Engineering as an undergraduate at UCLA. I now look forward to moving into graduate study in a field of engineering with a related, but different perspective. My interest in pursuing mechanical engineering comes from my engineering teacher from griffin high school. I came in as a ninth grader, and I just chose to try it because I really did not know what I wanted to do. Mr. Burrell taught me many things.
