Cultural Competence: A Necessity for Counselors

As a counselor it is important to have cultural competence of the ones in the community a counselor is providing services to. For those clients who share strong values toward their race, sex, culture, religion etc as a counselor one must have knowledge on those topics to provide proper services. Assuming all Muslims females suffer the same problem and can be solved the same way as other clients is failure. A counselor needs to meet the client where they are at and where they care coming from. Comparing clients to one another because of race, sex, religion etc is unacceptable. I made a surprised face and asked what do you mean with a shocked face. He must have notice my upset face when he rephrased his question to how can I help you, it doesn’t seem to be affecting your life. I believe there was some biases there he was a male I was a women sharing a story about my partner he demonstrated countertransference. He imposed his opinion about how beneficial it would be for me to attend group sessions instead of individual. Although I told him I wanted one on one counseling sessions he ignored my wished and handed me a group session paper. After that I told him thanks and walked off. Based of Holland’s Theory a counselor would be able to examine her personality. Leslie would be able to understand her characteristic, capacities, attributes and values. Leslie is in a state where she feels confused and troubled. Using Holland’s Theory will help Leslie exam her personality brings insight to who she is. Based of her personality we can match her career options. Once she gains insight of herself, this can help her bring clarity with her career troubles. As a counselor the theory will help me understand her more to where I can provide the proper support as a counselor. My goal as a counselor is to help Leslie meet her need in the environment for her to strive and be content. Finding proper environment to meet her personality is important if there is a balance between both Leslie will flourish.
