“With so many grave risks, are the perceived benefits worth it?’ Today there are performance enhancing drugs being used in every sport, professional or not. The method to find proof is continuing to get harder and harder even when testing has increased. Performance-enhancing drugs, or PEDs, are chemicals that can improve an athlete’s strength, endurance, or recovery from exercise. (“Drugs”) There are three different types of performance enhancing drugs. Anabolic Steroids, Human growth hormone, and Erythropoietin. Anabolic steroids are a synthetic form of human testosterone taken for those who seek muscle growth and strength. (“Drugs”) Human Growth Hormone (HGH) stimulates growth of the whole body. Steroids side effects create rage, depression, severe acne, and baldness. (“Performance”) Long term effects can be liver abnormalities, tumors, heart impairment, cholesterol risks, and the danger of contracting diseases because of the method of injection. (“Performance”) Human growth hormone enlarges and thickens the heart muscles, thus weakening the hearts function. (”Performance”) It can also lead to type 2 diabetes. Long term use leads to joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles deteriorating. (“Performance”) Erythropoietin can lead to strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots in the lungs.
