Pediatric surgeons are surgeons that are specifically trained to treat kids ages 0-17. Pediatric surgeons can be found all over the world, especially in the United States. There are an estimated 1,150 active pediatric surgeons in the U.S. while approximately 31 in Atlanta, Georgia. To become a pediatric surgeon in Georgia, students must go through years of extensive training and education to get the correct certifications to reach pediatric surgeon status. The first step to becoming a pediatric surgeon is education. Students must graduate high school and earn at least a bachelor’s degree from college. Children’s Hospital of Georgia (Augusta, GA), Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Atlanta, GA), and Savannah Pediatric Surgery (Savannah, GA) are all examples of astounding children’s hospitals in the state of Georgia. (Northern, “If You’re Sick, These 10 Hospitals in Georgia Are The Best in The State”). Each of these hospitals have similar annual wages; however, the annual salary can vary depending on what the specialty of pediatric surgery is. For example a pediatric neurosurgeon would make approximately $656,282 per year. (Decker, “What Is the Financial Income for a Pediatric Surgeon?”). While general pediatric surgeons would average about $350,000-$420,000 for their annual income. (“Georgia Surgeon- Pediatric Salaries”). In a hospital environment in Georgia, pediatric surgeons average 73 hours a week compared to a general surgeon’s 60 hours a week and a plastic surgeon’s 56 hours a week. Their work schedule is more intense due to the long hours and increased on-call time. These surgeons work with patients who have smaller fragile bodies making it challenging for them. While on-call, most doctors carry out day-to-day pre-and-post-operative exams. These exams take place in outpatient and inpatient settings. (“Pediatric Surgery Residency”). They also perform surgeries and procedures. These procedures can range from a simple appendectomy (removal of inflamed or infected appendix most likely due to appendicitis) to a multi-staged separation of craniopagus twins (conjoined twins whose craniums are fused together).
