After understanding the perceptions of parental pressures, Chinese American communities should be aware of a few effects that could happen to students if they are overwhelmed by parental pressure. These include, but are not limited to rebellion against parents, identity conflicts, and mental health problems (stress, depressions, anxiety, and commit suicide). Some people argue that parental pressure would set up for a student’s success, but they ignored the negative effects of parental pressure could severely affect a student’s life. First, parental pressure may lead to rebellion. Chinese American parents consider academic success as the top priority in their children’s lives. In many cases, students do not think that their parents’ definitions of success are reasonable or achievable. Their parents’ lofty expectations sound insane to them. In addition to that, they do not determine success by measuring their academic performances or the incomes they will gain in the future. However, students are forced to work hard to be academically successful and subsequently have a higher chance to get employed in high profession jobs. She thinks that it is difficult to achieve their parents’ expectations. Even though Michelle had worked hard, she did not get any reward or even a warm hug for the efforts that she had made. Her whole adolescent years are stressed out due to parental pressure. In most cases, Chinese American students do not get compliments or positive feedback from their parents. Instead of getting praises, they are getting more instructions and exhortations that pressure them to do better in the next time.
