Have you ever wondered why both the Panama Canal and the Great Wall of China are such iconic land marks for the countries they are in? It’s because of the magnitude of effort that took to create such massive structures. Hard work, blood, tears, sweat and certainly patience played part in the creation of such marvels. However the purpose behind each structure and the challenges builders faced during their construction is what truly sets them apart. For instance, The Panama Canal was built because there was no way to travel through the North and South American continents without having to go around the tip of South America. For example, they both took a massive amount of patience to finalize. The Panama took 34 years of hard, painstaking year to complete and the Great Wall took about 2,000 years. At first the Panama Canal had major military presence and involvement. Similarly, the Great Wall was used for military communication and protection. We can all agree that these structures are huge, but the number of lives they both claimed is also ginormous with a death rate of about 30 percent each. The founder of the Qin dynasty was Qin Shi Huangdi, a title meaning “First Emperor.” He was a brutal ruler, but he brought about many changes. However, in addition to all the new, some old ideas were continued from the Zhou, such as the emphasis on the wheat and rice staple foods, and the philosophies, Confucianism and Daoism. The old continuities tended to have been deeply embraced by China, and, just as the Zhou did, the Qin would create some ideas that lasted, and some that did not. Qin Shi Huangdi enforced a tough autocratic rule and, as a result, opposed formal culture that could make people counter his rule. This meant that he burned many books and attacked Confucian ideas in order to keep the people from generating rebellious ideas. When the Qin dynasty fell, so too did the opposition towards education, because it took away from the civilization culturally. In 1977, the United States signed a treaty with Panama stating that the U.S. would end its control beginning in the year 2000, and Panama would resume the operation and defense of the Panama Canal. Therefore, presently, the Panama Canal is neutral, but is still very important due to the U.S. We still have a say on what happens to and goes on around the canal, and if something were to happen to stop the flow of the ships through the canal, the United States would be allowed to step in and take care of the problem. Over the last ten years, nearly $100 million have been spent on repairing and widening the canal. Through all the thinking, planning, hard labor, and toiling put into the Panama Canal, the canal became arguably the most important canal ever and one of the greatest engineering feats ever.
The Aztec Empire stood for many years but never expanded much, only conquering small neighboring civilizations. The Aztec Empire was founded in the 6th century and didn’t fall until 1525. The Inca Civilization was a bit different. The Inca Civilization conquered as many lands that it could but quickly fell after just 100 years. In this essay I will be comparing the government, economics, and culture in the Aztec Civilizationand the Inca Empire.
As you can see, these two empires were some of the greatest the world has ever seen. They also had two of the greatest leaders in world history that are known around the globe. With very little differences between the two, the empires were similar in many ways, which is very interesting and incredible that two different empires starting in different places and time periods could be so alike.
The Panama Canal has been called the big ditch, the bridge between two continents, and the greatest shortcut in the world. When it was finally finished in 1914, the 51-mile waterway cut off over 7,900 miles of the distance between New York and San Francisco, and changed the face of the industrialized world ("Panama Canal"). This Canal is not the longest, the widest, the deepest, or the oldest canal in the world, but it is the only canal to connect two oceans, and still today is the greatest man-made waterway in the world ("Panama Canal Connects).
The culture and political structures of Panama as we know it today has evolved from an incredibly diverse and interesting history. Geographically, Panama lies on an isthmus, a strip of land that essentially connects the greater landmasses of North and South America. It is believed that volcanic activity in the late Pliocene era closed the former Central American Seaway that had separated the two continents. The climatic implications of this landform are incredible, allowing for the redistribution of oceanic currents and the formation of the Gulf Stream of the Atlantic of today.
What I find is the most interesting about the Great Wall is that it is an anthropologist’s dream. Physically, culturally, politically, economically, and militaristic, the list goes on and on.
China still uses the Wall today, as well. The vast structure serves as a popular tourist attraction, thus, stimulating Chinese economy. Throughout its lifetime, the masterpiece repelled invaders such as the Mongols from the empire that would soon be most of China. This protection allowed China to undergo some of the most vital advancements, such as standardization of things like currency, which unified to the six very different cities that this nation is comprised of. This great work of mankind is often overlooked and forgotten, unfortunately. Not too many people know of the influence the Great Wall has had on China. Hopefully one day, all across the globe will know of the incredible good that this ancient marvel has done for one of the world’s most prolonged societies.
Only the Great Pyramid of Giza still stands today. The Great Wall of China is not as old as any of the wonders, but has survived close to twenty-three hundred years. Thirty percent of the wall has fallen to ruins, but the wall shows the ancient history of a country at war and is in danger of being ruined by farmers today. Farmers are using the wall as protection for their crops. The Chinese government has made an attempt to protect the wall, but was not able to reach farmers in rural areas.

Without the Great Wall of China, the Chinese empire would have fallen due to Mongolian attacks, which is true, but there is a great difference between the Great Wall and the Berlin Wall or the mending wall.
