Pablo Ruíz y Picasso, best known as Pablo Picasso, was a painter and sculptor with a list of many other occupations. He was born October 25, 1881 in Málaga, Spain and died April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France as a legend. “Spanish expatriate Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the co-creator of Cubism” (“Pablo Picasso Biography”). Picasso 's father was a talented painter and art teacher who began teaching him how to paint and draw as a young child. By Picasso 's early teen years his talent had exceeded his father 's. Picasso soon became well trained in classical methods after attending the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Spain and the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. However, inspired by the unique individuals he observed while roaming the streets of Madrid, Picasso broke away from these classical methods and began a lifelong process of experimentation and innovation. Picasso went through several periods which he expressed in his artwork. Before the 1900s, most of his artwork was in its beginning stages as he just started painting with his father, but it gradually developed as his career as a painter begun. During this period Picasso focused on the shapes as he re-assembled objects in an abstract form causing distortion. He created unity in his artwork through the use of monochrome brownish and neutral colors. For example, Les Demoiselles d 'Avignon was a cubism painting by Pablo Picasso created in 1907. The work portrays five nude female prostitutes from a brothel with deminsions 243.9 cm × 233.7 cm (96 in × 92 in) ("Les Demoiselles D 'Avignon."). Although Picasso started with classical artwork he continued to explore and change his style, even expanding into abstract artwork which he is known for today
