Along with George Braque, Picasso was responsible for the invention of cubism. Cubism is one of the most radical restructuring of the way that a work of art constructs its meaning. Cubism is a term that was derived from a reference made to geometric schemes and cubes. Cubism has been known as the first and the most influential of all movements in twentieth century art . Before Picasso did any cubism paintings, there were works exibititing a raw intensity and violence due to his reading of non western art aligned with European primitivism. This contrasting position provided the dynamic for Picasso’s work. In his paintings such as Mother and Child, Picasso showed the fetishistic and simplifying aspects of primitivism. In his paintings Picasso used bright hues and subdued grays and earth colors. Picasso found out that shapes could have meaning and identities by their arrangement .
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga. Picasso’s father, who was a drawing teacher at the Escuela Provin cal de Bell Artes starting teaching Picasso how to paint. His father recognized and encouraged his son’s talent as an artist. His childhood and teenage drawings showed his father’s repertory, an interest with the bullfight and conventional academic work. He enrolled in his father’s drawing classes in 1892 and produced about fifteen oil portraits in 1895.He did experiments with caricatures and sketches in 1894. Although Picasso continued painting, he did not exhibit during that time. Picasso's works were usually held in exhibitions and were highly renowned although there were still many who did not agree with his style. Overall, Picasso's works reflected that of his time as the creation of the camera lead to a new movement of art which is still respected to this day.
Picasso initiated Cubism at the age of twenty-six after he already had established himself as a successful painter. According to Souch‚re, Picasso led the evolution towards cubism in order to "escape the tyranny of the laws of the tangible world, to fly beyond all the degradations of the lie, the stupidity of criticism, towards that total freedom which inspired his youth." As Barnes notes, Cubism was an art that concentrated on forms, and an artist's job was to give life to that form. Until this goal is accomplished, the Cubist painter has not fully realized his purpose.
Pablo Picasso is well renowned as an artist who adapted his style based on the changing currents of the artistic world. He worked in a variety of styles in an effort to continually experiment with the effects and methods of painting. This experimentation led him to the realm of cubism where Picasso worked on creating forms out of various shapes. We are introduced to Picasso’s nonrepresentational art through the advent of the cubist style of painting. During his time working on this style, Picasso developed the painting Woman in the Studio. A painting created late in Picasso’s artistic career, this painting displays many of the characteristics common in cubism. The painting’s title serves as a description of the painting and explains the scenario depicted by Pablo Picasso. In analyzing this work, it is important to observe the subject matter, understand the formal elements of the painting, and attempt to evoke and comprehend the emotions represented in the painting. Pablo Picasso is the worlds most renowned artist of the 20th century. He did a variety of skills related to the world of art. Most people remember him as just a painter, but he was more than that. He could do sculpting, drawing, engraving, lithographs, and more. One of his most famous periods of all time, The Blue Period showed all that he was capable of. More than the paintings above all else he learned all his abilities self-taught from his father and the schooling his father helped provide.

The foundation for Picasso’s successful life was set early on. He was brought into this world by mother, Maria Picasso Lopez (Bernadac and Bouchet 18), and father, Don Jose Ruiz Blasco (Cabanne 1), on October 25th in 1881, at 11:15 p.m. (Bernadac and Bouchet 17). Picasso had two younger sisters Dolores and Concepción , called Conchita , who died at the age of four. Conchita 's death affected Picasso in the coming years in later life . Picasso died in France in April 1973. Picasso 's family was middle class . His father, Ruiz , was a painter and most of his life Ruiz was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum. Ruiz encouraged his son and helped him with his art. Perhaps because of his parents work , Picasso had a love and a skill for drawing from an early age . In fact , his mother reported that his first word was pencil. His mother and father encouraged him to dream and both go their own way . "When I was a kid , my mother told me . ' If you become a soldier , you'll be a general If you become a monk you'll end up as the Pope ,'" recalled later. "Instead, I became a painter and ended up as Picasso. In 1907, Picasso created a new type of art, Cubism. For those who don’t know what cubism is, it captured and exaggerated certain features of a subject. “Cubism is renowned as a groundbreaking artistic movement in and of its own right, yet it also influenced generations of artists to follow, shaping the very history of art.” (Unknown 6) This technique changed art all around the world. It helped people express more depths within a painting. Diego Rivera was born December 8th, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico (1). He first began creating art and murals at the age of three after the death of his twin brother (2). His parents caught him but rather then punishing him for it they instead nurtured his growing creativity by installing canvas and chalkboards on the walls (2). At the age of 10, Rivera went to further his knowledge at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City (1).
Juan Gris, a Spanish-born painter, made important contributions to the modern style of painting called Cubism. GrisÕs paintings were always depicting his immediate surroundings. He painted still lives composed of simple, everyday objects, portraits of friends, and occasionally landscapes or cityscapes. The objects in his paintings and collages are more clearly defined and richly colored than those in the works of the earlier cubists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
His work is mostly famous with his Cubism events. As he enters its twenty-fifth year, Picasso changed his style of painting. It breaks down and reproduces objects in simple geometric shapes. Cézanne, African tribal art and Iberian sculpture would be the inspiration the painter when it turned to Cubism. (Picasso, P. (1970) With the Demoiselles d 'Avignon that this new style explodes in 1907. That same year, he met Georges Braque with whom he develops the power of Cubism. The two work closely together. To address the problem of representing what exists in three dimensions on a two dimensional surface, Braque and Picasso bring a new answer. They replace the usual codes of color, volume and perspective through a system of geometric signs. They will add to it, in a subsequent phase (synthetic cubism), the use of pieces of various materials (sand, paper, metal, wood, fabric, cardboard ...) to avoid falling into abstract art. Braque and Picasso led the way, after being so influenced by the master artist, Cézanne. Impressionism had broken away from the expected traditional style of painting, and I would say that Cubism did the same thing, thereby expressing everyday life in a different way. Each style saw critics and the public finding it hard to accept their departure away from traditions. Another similarity that carried on through to the Cubism style was the Impressionists’ use of time in their paintings. In contrast, Cubism saw artists expressing the human form in different ways that had never been seen before.
In the early 20th century several movements occurred in America and Europe, therefore it was an era that characterized by the imperialism industrialization which polarized the nation into two categories of high and the low class. And the western culture dominated most of the world possessions. The U.S was able to have power over their land and they gained high economic and political power.
