Organic Molecules Lab Report

Introduction An organic molecule is a molecule that contains hydrogen and carbon. They are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The carbon bonds to other atoms through covalent bonding. They are often large, have many atoms, and are associated with living organisms. A carbohydrate is an organic molecule made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. It is made in a 1:2:1 ratio. Examples of these are sugars and starches. Sugar is an immediate energy source, so if you needed energy right away you should eat something with a lot of sugar. Starch is a 12-24 hour energy source. This is good to eat the day before you have something. An example is when a team has a pasta party the night before a big game. Carbohydrates can play a structural …show more content…

If I got the wife’s throwup sample, then my results will be positive for lipids, simple sugar, and starch. These are the three organic molecules found in her meal of soda and french fries. If the sample is the Butler’s throw up after his meal of steak, then the results will be positive for lipids and proteins. The victims ate ice cream and chocolate syrup. If I get the sample of throwup that belongs to the victim, then it will contain simple sugar. If it is the best friends throwup, who ate a hamburger, then it will contain both protein and starch. The mistress only drank water that day. If the mistress was the one that threw up, there will be no organic molecules in it because water, or H20, doesn’t contain carbon, so it is not an organic …show more content…

Based on my results, the vomit belonged to the butler. I accept my hypothesis because the Butler’s sample did contain the predicted organic molecules of lipids and proteins. My results show that the Butler threw up at the crime scene. When lipids tested positive, I knew that the victim, the best friend, and the mistress would have to be eliminated as suspects for who threw up because none of the foods they ate contained lipids. I knew it had to be the butler because the wife’s meal had soda and french fries, neither of which contain protein. The negative test results for carbohydrates, both simple sugars and starches, helped me ensure that I had the correct results. The fatty part of the steak contained lipids, but the steak is meat, which is a protein. Many errors could have led to unexpected results in the lab. Human error is always a possibility. Some of the solution may not have been mixed enough, dried enough on the brown paper, or heated long enough. Also, someone may incorrectly label a color, as some people may see one color, while another sees a different color. If someone puts too much or not enough solution in the test, the color may end up completely different. All of these may have caused errors in the results, such as testing positive or negative for organic
