Ordinary People centers around Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton), an 18-year-old boy and the struggles he and his parents, Calvin and Beth have been facing for the past year in suburban Chicago. In the beginning of the movie, it is evident that Conrad had been through something traumatic because of his difficulties sleeping and flashbacks and that his relationship with his family was strained. It is revealed that Conrad attempted suicide after a boating accident where his brother, Buck, died. As a result, Conrad was placed in a hospital, and he was released only a month before the movie began. Calvin seems genuinely concerned about Conrad and his well being whereas Beth doesn’t seem bothered by it, as if she doesn’t even care about her son. Calvin’s …show more content…

Conrad’s coach had a discussion with him about his position on the team as well as Conrad’s time in the hospital and this is when we find out he underwent shock therapy as a means to help him. After this, Conrad calls the psychiatrist, Dr. Berger to set up an appointment and at this time he seems anxious and uncomfortable, maybe even regretting calling the psychiatrist in the first place. In their first session together, Conrad expresses that he is only there because he wants to learn how to control his emotions so that people will stop worrying about him, not to work on himself. Although this was initially what they worked on, Dr. Berger helped Conrad learn to express himself instead of holding his feelings back, even if that meant displaying anger towards others including his mother and his …show more content…

Whenever Conrad tries to talk to Beth she pushes him away and is uninterested, she will only have superficial conversations with him and shows him no affection. This doesn’t stop Conrad from trying until he realizes no matter what he does won’t be enough because he is not Buck. When Conrad and Beth argue, Calvin tries to be peacekeeper and Beth always accuses him of taking Conrad’s side because he’s afraid that Conrad may try to attempt suicide again if he is pushed over the edge. Conrad tells Calvin that Beth hates him, and there is nothing he could do to change that. Conrad also expressed his anger when he started a fistfight with one of his former friends.
