The capital of Washington is Olympia, thought that was not always its name. In fact, for four years between the founding of Olympia, 1846, and 1850, Olympia was called Smithster, named after two people named Smith and Sylvester who were early inhabitants of Olympia. The name was changed because of the scenic Olympic Mountains creating a nice view north of the city. In 1853, Isaac Stevens appeared as Washington's first territorial governor. Isaac seemed to be a very bright man, and very able. He was first in his class in graduation, and he proved himself to be hardworking and able to handle many tasks given to him at the same time. Truly a first governor to be proud of, even if he was a little short. The current capitol building of Olympia did not appear until 1928, but the one before it was built from 1880 to 1882 and served as the town's courthouse until 1905, when it was made the Capitol building. …show more content…

There were a couple cities other than Olympia that were competing for the title of Washington's capital such as Tacoma, Seattle, Port Townsend, and Vancouver, but Olympia was eventually chosen because of its location. Personally, if I had the chance to move, relocate, or reconstruct Washington's capital, I wouldn't. I would change the capital to be Seattle. My reason is that when people say "Provo" people don't think of Utah, they think, "Where's Provo?" Olympia, to me, has always had a very Oregon feel. Up until recently, when I heard "Olympia", I thought, "Oregon" until I remembered it was the capital of my state. Seattle, however- Everyone knows where Seattle is! Seattle has appeared in many television shows where it was indicated that Seattle is in Washington, such as iCarly. The big city atmosphere, the Space Needle, the advanced tech- It's no wonder people mistake Seattle as the capital of Washington, since it's so well known both in general and for its art and
