On his journey home, Odysseus faces many temptations that try to curve the course of his voyage. Each temptation has not benefited Odysseus because they all try to either kill him or make his travel back to Ithaca longer. A temptation that he faces is when the ships land on the island of the cyclops. Odysseus says to his men “My good friends, for the time being stay here, while I go in my ship with my crew to find out what kind of men are over there, and whether they are aggressive savages with no senses of right or wrong or hospitable and god-fearing people” (IX,114).
