First and foremost, being compassionate, implementing client-centered treatments, being able to problem-solving, and critically think, are an asset of becoming a competent OTA and PTA. In the article "10 Reasons Why You Will Succeed as an Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist Assistant" Johnson mentioned "OTAs and PTAs not only know about these traits and skills that help them succeed throughout their career; but also know how to incorporate them into clients lives, helping them to succeed as well "( Johnson, 2015). Secondly, typical salaries for an OTA and PTA vary upon several situations such as, the location of work, how long you have worked for, and the type of contract that you’re under. On the other hand, working at hospitals start at about $20 an hour but again possibly can increase to $30. In addition, depending on the type of contract the OTA/PTA is working under, they may only get paid per client they see. Regardless of the pay, I would prefer working in a hospital setting because I believe there are a lot more opportunities for applying the skills I have learned into …show more content…
It requires research, education, and practical practice to understand what it is like to work within the field. In 2016 when I was within the last year of high school, I wanted to take a coop class because I was going to attend college the following September; thus, I wanted to know what to apply for. I have always had an interest in learning about the body and helping those who are in need. After taking several Careers Cursing tests, along with research, I came across an OTA and PTA. I spoke to my teacher at school if it were possible to take a coop course as a rehab student. After approval, I was placed at Etobicoke General Hospital for 6 months and was able to observe what exactly an OTA and PTA does. I met a couple of students, who were at the time enrolled in the OTA/PTA program at Humber, and spoke to them about how the program is. After speaking to them, it opened up the doors for me; and I knew this is what I wanted to do. The following September of 2016 after graduating from High School, I was accepted into the OTA and PTA program at Humber College. After receiving the practical experience I needed in order to understand what is like to work within this profession, I absolutely enjoyed it. There was never a time where I regretted choosing to work within this field of practice. It truly helped me grow as an individual and made me see what it’s like to help those in need and get
Observing therapy assistants in the field and seeing what they do in their jobs was an eye opener for me. There were several different injuries that I saw, ranging from people with work related injuries to jamming fingers in machines. After observing Mr. Kohler throughout the day, I got to see him interact with patients and perform activities that helped his patients in their rehabilitation phase of recovery. He told me that the improvements he sees first hand from his patients is rewarding and he feels achieved when he sees patients make steady recoveries. From this experience, I also learned that occupational therapy offers a diverse number of avenues for employment. I was pleased to know that I can specialize in a specific area if I desire to do so in the

When I was 15, my grandmother suffered from a severe stroke and was advised to go to a rehabilitation center. At that time I had not ever heard of the profession called occupational therapy. Upon visiting my grandmother, I had the opportunity to witness several health care professionals working together to help rehabilitate her. I have always wanted to engage in a career in which I could attribute to helping people, and at first I thought physical therapy would best compliment my natural abilities but then I encountered the occupational therapist. So as I watched her work with my grandmother diligently I realized that I had found exactly what I was looking for.
Occupational therapy was based off of psychology; we evolved from treating mentally ill patients with isolation as an efficient treatment plan. We must never forget we are known to be “the art and science of helping people do the day-to-day activities that are important and meaningful to their health and well being through engagement in valued occupations” (Crepeau, Cohn, & Schell, 2008). To other professional disciplines this article explains the difference between each of us, yet can also express our relation to one another. The basic goal of all therapeutic disciplines is to better our clients life, through physical, speech or occupational therapy. Every discipline targets different goals, may it be body mechanics, reducing a stutter or buttoning a shirt, at the end of the day our clients well being may it be through science, art or both is all that matters. To the occupational therapy field this article means progress for what we do. Reading this article today in the year 2015 did not seem like old information to me, it is still relevant, I am proud that our field is not only evolving with contemporary time but it is also maintaining its
Occupational therapy (OT) theory offers valuable contribution to support professionalization since possessing a unique body of knowledge is essential to define a profession (Cooper, 2012). To utilize theory effectively, it is essential to differentiate between generic and specific theory as knowledge of the core theory helps to form OT identity and action as a practicing practitioner. In this essay, OT theory refers only to philosophy and OT specific models. Frame of references (FOR) will not be included since it can be shared with the other professions (Boniface & Seymour, 2012).
Occupational Therapy combines my passions for science, the mind, art, and improving others' lives. It will allow me to not only make money, as any job will, but to keep me creative as I design therapies for each unique patient, and to keep me in shape as I participate in exercises alongside them. I don't want to just
Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me, even at a young age, to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit.

I found a job as CNA for the patient who had disabilities. One patient in particular changed the direction of my life and started me thinking about working in medicine. I took care of an older woman who was unable to ambulate due to her diagnosis of stroke. She experienced chronic weakness of bilateral lower extremity so I supported her with my arms to steady her. When I looked into her eyes, I could feel her saying, “you truly care about me, understand me, and thank you for taking the time to sense my expression and desire.” That’s the care all of us have deep inside, where our motives no longer become self-seeking but other-seeking. This care has the power to exponentially change that person’s life and the lives of others. It is true that other patients helped me decide to go into medicine, but Stacy had the biggest impact in my
Exploring the history behind the evolving theories in occupational therapy is a significant component to understanding how each model and frame of reference was developed and continues to be utilized by healthcare professionals. Researching the most commonly used occupation-based model in practice today, the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), allowed for the creation of a more in-depth knowledge base about the biological background of the individual who developed it. It also exposed the application of MOHO to occupational therapy, health care, society, and how intervention can be used in therapy. Investigating the biological narrative of the creator provides knowledge about the motivation behind the development of this model and the aspects
