When working with adults with psychological problems, occupational therapist must use different techniques. Some clients have auditory problems and are very sensitive to sounds. Other clients have tactile problems and truly dislike being touch and are sensitive to texture. Occupational therapist are trained in working with clients with all sorts of cognitive issues. Cognition processes include orientation, attention, perception, and problem solving, memory, judgment, language, reasoning, and planning. In adults, cognitive disorders may be caused by traumatic brain injuries, infections, tumors, stroke, or dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. Based on a study done in 2010, about 5.3 million people in the U.S., most over the age of 65, had Alzheimer’s disease, while another 5.3 million people had other types of dementia. Although there are some drawbacks to clients such as the cost of service, the availability of services, and the time commitment to the program, there are much more advantages to it. Interventions are created help children and adults with appropriately responding to information coming through senses and learning how to be physically independent. Occupational therapist aid and instruct individuals in interacting and communicating with others. They also help identify, develop, and adapt engagement in meaningful activities that enhance the client’s quality of life. The proper equipment and technology devices are identified to physically, emotionally, and mentally support a client to reduce environmental barriers that limit participation in daily activities. Occupational therapists collaborate with families, schools, and the community, to ensure that their clients are receiving the extra support they need to either improve, maintain, or regain skills for a life of independence.
